Don't Miss Great Sports Entertainment Because of Poor Reception. All it takes is a little fine tuning: first turn the VHF Channel Dial to 'U'. Then turn the UHF Channel Dial to '28'. Fine tune the dial until the sound and picture are bright and clear. For most homes, an indoor UHF antenna attached to the back of your set is all you need for clear recep tion. If an outside UHF antenna is needed, direct it towards the WPTF-TV transmitting tower in Apex. The Oilers are sure to unleash crack running back Earl Campbell on the Pitts burgh secondary. This key AFC Central game will be the subject of much talk from the inimitable Howard Cosell, who will share the mike with colleagues Frank Gifford and Don Meredith. CHECK LISTINGS FOR EXACT AIR TIME SpDFttS by Steve K. Walz SPORTSWHIRLED Three former NHL goaltenders have hung up their skates in the past month, and two of them were once considered prime NHL property. Edmonton waved goodbye to young netminder Pete LoPresti, who excelled with Minnesota when the North Stars were a less than mediocre hockey team. One wonders whether the Oilers made a big mistake in not giving the American-born goaler a chance to prove himself between the pipes. Whether the Albertan squad realizes it or not, Dave Dryden isn't getting any younger and Ed Mio will never win the Vezina Trophy. I hope LoPresti reconsiders his retirement. In Washington, Bernie Wolfe is now doing some public relations for the Caps. Bernie, who showed flashes of brilliance in net, got caught in the numbers game when the team brought in Wayne Stephenson and Gary Inness. In Michel Belhumeur' case, it was Father Time that caught up with the former Flyer and Caps goalie ... In the 'Where Are They Now' category: Larry Sacharuk, who is reputed to have one of the hardest shots in all of hockey, is toiling for the Flames' farm team in Birmingham. 'Satch' once scored 20 goals as a defenseman for the St. Louis Blues but his less than lacklustre defensive play cost him an opportunity to play in the NHL on a regular basis. Larry's teammate, Paul Henderson, might deserve one last hurrah around the NHL. Henderson was a big hero in Toronto when he played for the Leafs . . . John Ferguson, general manager of the Winnipeg Jets, raided the New York Rangers (he coached them a few years ago) when the Jets entered the NHL. Tulsa, Winnipeg's CHL farm team, has Lindsay Middlebrook, Randy Mohns, John Bethel, Mark Heaslip and Benoit Gosselin, all former Rangers property. HOOPSTERS Although Pete Maravich has had his share of crippling injuries, it hasn't prevented the Jazz-man from bombing three-point field goals at a 60 percent clip. Denver's John Roche has also done well from the homerun range, giving the Nuggets an extra added dimension on offense when the going gets rough. John, who once played a hero's role with the old New York Nets, retired a few years ago to pursue a business career, but was summoned back into the NBA this year. J.R. could be the comeback player of the decade . . . Cedrlc Maxwell has finally become a bonafide star with the Celtics. He's shooting at a torrid 60-plus percent from the field . . . The Los Angeles Lakers have the best team field goal average . . . Once again the San Antonio Spurs lead the league in points scored per game 119 ... The Knicks look like a ticking time bomb that's about to go off at any time . . Could Daryl Dawkins' recent encounter with a shattered backboard be made into a movie called 'Heart of Glass'? SPORTS QUEST Q. What's happened to the Is landers? Are they going to trade Glenn Retch? B.M. Timmins, Ontario A. The Long Island squad is suffering from a severe case of complacency, which will prompt G.M. Bill Torrey and coach Al Arbour to make some changes. Hopefully this will shake the former Stanley Cup contenders out of their coma. Resch might be used as trade bait, but Bill Smith isn't untouchahi either. Comp'Jhg, P.O.
