UP1 Photo NEW YORK, NY Why are school boards throughout the country considering sex education -d family life programs? Here are some of the reasons: Each year more than pne million teenagers "become pregnant. Seventy percent of preg nant teenagers do not finish school. More than a quarter million caes of VD among teenagers are reported annually. One of every five 13 and 14-year-olds has already had sexual inter course; more than half of all teenagers are sexually active before age 20. In Schools and Parents Partners in Sex Educa tion, Sol Gordon and Irv ing R. Dickman offer parents and teachers guidance on how they can provide young people with the information and values they need to develop healthy, responsi ble, and mature sexuality. The 28-page Public Af fairs Pamphlet includes a model curriculum for family life education pro grams and a list of resources for further in formation. Copies are available for 50 cents each from the non-profit Public Affairs Commit tee, 381 Park Avenue South, New York, N. Y. 10016. Just about everyone agrees that the primary responsibility for sex education lies with parents. "One problem," Gordon and Dickman point out, "is that too many parents are uncom fortable in the role of sex educator.... For many children, friends or the media re their main soucre of infor mation or misinforma tion, unless they are for tunate enough to have an effective sex education program in their school. - But is it true that the more teenagers learn about sex, the more sex ually active they become? Is sex education a cause of increased teenage pregnancies? Paradox ically, say Gordon and Dickman, "those who are most active sexually are usually those who know the least.... Indicators are that good sex education programs do reduce teenage pregnancies and lower the incidence of vemeral diseases." So far, only 15 or 20 local school systems offer adequate sex education or family life programs, Gor don and Dickman estimate. "As a nation, we haven't really tried sex education yet." Sex education should deal with anatomy and biology, but also with feel ings, attitudes, standards, and human relationships. , "At a minimum," Gor don and Dickman suggest, "a good sex education program ought to help young people to achieve: An enchanced self- and that means not agree ing to unwanted sex 'because he won't take me out again if I don't,' or because 'everyone's doing if; An understanding of love and the sexual dimen sion of life; A better preparation for marriage and for parenthood; A more knowledgeable and value-based approach to sexual decision-making (so that the question is not 'why not?' but 'why yes?').... The key to an effective sex education program is the extent to which students are helped to understand the basis of their deci sions, why they do what they do and the conse quences." "Schools need parents as partners if the sex or family life education pro gram is to succeed," Gor don and Dickman stress. "Even to begin such a program, the schools need parents' support." They outline many ways parents and schools can work together. Schools and Parents Partners in Sex Education is No. 581 in the Public Affairs Pamphlet series, now in its 45th year. This highly regarded series in cludes many titles on family relationships, physical and mental health, and social issues. All pamphlets are 50 cents each; a catalog is available on request. These are the months when budget-conscious consumers can get their best bargains on this already economical seafood delight at their local retail seafood counter. It used to be that croaker and other such fin fish from Virginia provided a delicious change of taste for fisher folk, but hardly anyone else. But today, thanks to modern processing and the state's rapidly growing sea food industry, fresh Virginia seafood is shipped through out the eastern half of the United States. To experience the delec table difference that croaker, properly prepared, can make in your diet, try this recipe, a long- CROAKER FRANCHESE 4 small croaker (8-10 oz. boned) 4 slices white bread 4 large eggs 1 bottle dry white wine 4 lemons flour 14 lb. butter Heat butter in saute pan. While butter is heating break and beat eggs. Dip bread into egg and place in frying pan. While the bread is frying dredge the croaker in flour. Then place dredged croaker into the egg. After removing the fried bread, place croaker in pan. Slice two of ' j lemons into eight slices each. Slice each piece of bread into four triangles. Then arrange on a plate. By now it's time to turn the croaker. When you turn the croaker. on its back side, squeeze, the juice of the two lemons aiid pour about four ounces of the white wine over the fish. Salt and pep per to taste. Allow to saute for five minutes. Serve the time favorite of Virginia remaining wine with the fish.
