motional functions. Under
Perry Cooper's direction, he
will also be specifically work
ing to secure Atlantic artist
exposure on the various cable
and pay tv outlets. Hill will
also supervise and maintain
the Atlantic Video Library,
which includes all available
recordings of both historical
and current interest. In this
regard, he will be responsible
for securing written permis
sions from artists or their
representatives for video use,
and he will be consulting
with the legal department as
needed.

Atlantic Records' Director of

of America's inpst honored
living composer, Aaron
Copland, with reflections

career, is the premiere broad

special programs from the

the Performing Arts in
Washington, D. C, Hosted
by Hal Holbrook, the
90-minute "A Copland
Celebration!" will air at 9
p.m. Wednesday, April 1 On
Center Channel 4. "
In November, 1980, birth
day celebrations were held
across the United States and
abroad in honor of 80-year-old
composer Aaron
Copland. On his actual birth
date November 14
Copland was honored at the
Kennedy Center with selec
tions from his life's work
performed by the National
Symphony Orchestr, with
Mstislav Rostropqvich,
Leonard Bernstein, and
Copland himself conducting.
Utilizing the birthday con
cert as a background against
which Copland could reflect
up his career, "A Copland
Celebration!" features inter
views with the com
poserconductor, rehearsals
for the birthday celebration
in Washington, backstage
glimpses of Copland, Berns
tein and Rostropovich before,
and after the concert, and ex-..
cerpts from films like "The
City" (1939) and "The
Heiress" (1949) for which he
composed the scores. "A
Copland Celebration!"
features excerpts from
Copland's "Concerto for
Piano and Orchestra"
- (1927), which caused a sensa
tion after its premiere in
Boston . because of its jazz
. elements, and "El Salon
; Mexico" (1936). Featured iri"
j their entirety are Copland's.
"Fanfare for the Common
Man" (1934), "Appalachian
Spring" (1944), and the stirr
ing "Lincoln Portrait"
(1942) narrated by Copland
himself.
Kennedy Center Tonight is
a series of special programs
designed to use a live event at
the Kennedy Center as a spr
ingboard for illumination of
various American perform
ing artists, and will embrace
a variety of performing arts
as they emanate from
America's national cultural
center. Three additional
Kennedy Center Tonight
specials will follow "A
Copland Celebration!" in
the 1980-81 television season.

Events at the Kennedy
