During the segment in. the village, where she plays the -role of high priestess, Ms Burch moves with graceful power, interpreting the Con golese dance steps, as envi sioned by Davis, with skill and precision. Then from the aisle come, the three figures portraying: the Catholic priest and the two nuns. They march slowly to the stage. The confrontation begins. In many ways, this dance 'portrays the classic battle bet ween white women and black men, because the priest takes i no active role. He just stands, there, symbolizing the authori ty under which the nuns func tion. " The African priest fights valiantly for his audience, but before long the young girls his flock so to speak, Ms. Burch included begin sway-, ing along with the movements of the nuns. But suddenly, defiance screaming with every move, with every twist of her shapely body, with every kick of her long legs, Ms. Burch breaks away", .dancing alone in rebellion against the takeover. And that's how it ends: one. black woman defiantly resisting the white takeover of her man, her culture and her religion. Ms. Burch brings that fiery defiance to the stage right out of her personal life. , She lives in Weaver Street Apartments, a federally sub sidized apartment complex, an environment where it is often a . lot easier to surrender than fight. But Ms. Burch has -chosen to fight. "I can't take all the credit," she said in a recent interview. "My mother has pushed and inspired me a lot. When I get discouraged, she urges me to keep trying." Mrs. Onnie Burch, Ivy's mother, explains: , "It is very simple, I want my daughter to be successful in whatever she does. So I am ' supportive of her endeavors. According -tcr'-Ms. Burch , her main tasks right now are her three-year-old daughter, i April, and ,the Weaver Street1 Dancers, a group of kids from the same neighborhood. Ms. Burch leads the group. p . Davis backs her completely. "If I had a daughter, I'd want her to be just like Ivy,"1 said Davis, an' internationally known dancer, founder and director of the Chuck Davis Dance Company. "She works so hard she makes you want to help her, and she has the sense of responsibility to finish what .she starts.,,.,r;':-.'-Vf'-r'-v One good example of that is Ms.; Burch's work with and dedication to the Weaver Street group. "Chuck wanted me to go to Africa with him last year," Ms. Burch said,' "and had even sent me an application. But I was so involved with the Weaver Street group and other local groups that I didn't follow through." . But she has not closed the door on her dancing future, and has not limited her horizons to Durham.-- "I really want to be a pro fessional dancer," she said, "and I'd like t6 go to the NYU School of Dance (New York University), because I think I'll need that type of background to reach the level I'm aiming for.'.' , Impressed, with her talent and her commitment, Ms. Burch's dance teachers believe she '- has a bright future in dance. ' : "The thing that impressed me about her is her integrity," said Abel Salaam, assistant ar tistic director with the Chuck Davis group. "By that I mean -she has-an excellent spirit for dance, along with lots of natural ability and self discipline." The self-discipline has held Ms. Burch in good stead for' the past four years that she's been studying dance under Davis's instruction. And Friday nights perfor mance was a peak in her short dancing career. She showed by that performance, as Salaam has said, that with the right in structors, Ms Burch has a bright dancing future. Davis sums it up this way: "Her overall attitude toward life is very up, and this attitude, extends to her dance. A lot of us are in her corner, and her general get-up-and-get-out-there-and-get-it-done attitude makes us want to do all we can i for her." And while Ms. Burch more -than likely will appreciate all the help she can get, she's do ing her share as well. Boldly, she attacks her goal to be a dancer, because there's nothing - subtle about Ms. Burch.
