His book, tentatively titled "Black Confederates," will be published next year. According to Jordan, "there were blacks who helped the Confederacy and those who didn’t." The book will recount how some black Virginians volunteered to serve fo; the South as early as June 1861. Jordan has found both Union and Confederate witness accounts of free blacks and slaves fighting at the battles of Manassas and Antietam, among others. Jordan also plans to write about black spies for the South and the North, and chronicle the attitudes of blacks on slavery and the war. He is writing the book while on leave and is supported by a $10,500 grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Jordan, who has written two other books on the war, studied diaries, newspapers, government documents and census data in an attempt to piece together a black history of the period. Many blacks worked as military lalXHers and tried to volunteer for the Confederate army, bought war bonds and killed Union soldiers, Jordan said. There were various reasons for the support, including a strong desire by slaves to please their masters, he said. Free blacks may have "wanted to stay in the good j graces" of their white neighbors, (Jordan said. There also were free blacks who didn’t want a change in their status and who felt more loyalty to the ;tate than to the country, a common feeling in those times, he said. Though the evidence may make tome people uncomfortable, Jordan said he won’t hack away from his rndings. "I’m writing the book as a contribution to Virginia. I’m proud to be a Virginian,” said Jordan, who grew up in a Norfolk housing project Jordan believes he has a responsibility to explore the subject because he considers the Civil War the genesis of the civil rights movement and an important part ol black heritage. "It affects us today," he said. "1 see this as a duty. I owe it to black peoole" According to recent estimates there are about 40,000 different varieties of fish. ■lU- r ^ ■ .V ■■■ ..-^7 ' n - —T...,— The potato must grow entireiy under ground and after harvest shouid be kept in a dark piace.
