There never has been such' a crowd there as will be to-night. The semi-annual examination of the Caro lina Military Institute, begin yesterday, and will be resumed to-day. ' R. M. Miller & Sons will sell a valuable house and lot at Pineville to-day sale posi tive. It is advertised in the Observes. Not a great many valentines passed through the office this season. This iiliotic custom is rapidly losing its popularity. Dr Hemphill, agent of Erskine Jollege. Abbeville, SJ C, will preach at the Associate Reformed Chapel this evening at 7 o'clock Sunday was no pleasant day, an1 none of the churches were crowded. All f then were open, and the pulpit of each was occu pied by its regular pastor. Connection is now made at Columbia be tween the South Carolina and the Charlotte, Columbia & Augusta Railroads. A great convenience to travelers. If it is in order we would rise to inquire what has become of the Hillsboro" Rewrderf It has been so long since we have gazed up. on its honest countenance, that we have almost forgotten how it looks. We can't economize so much in this office, now, in the matter of fuel, as we used to. Congressmen ha ve.quLU sending us bound copies of Patent OfficeReports, and sich. Restore the franking privilege! ' Edwin Adams carries his own scenery and malbinCTyVahi Interesting jcenes this evening, as we gatner from the programme, will be the appearance, during Act IV, of a full rigged ship. - V "If I fall in, come after me," is what one tellow said to another, as he attempted to walk the stepping , stones in front of the Episcopal Gburch, Sunday night, while his companion stood oh the Bank and waited to see what his fate would be. The celebrated J Hungarian cantratrice, lima DeMurska, is traveling in the South, and will sing in Columbia on the 19th: She is said to be second only toi Nillsoh and Patti. Wonder if she. can't btf induced to pay Charlotte a visit? - - The moon didn't get half a chance again last night, an accouat of the clouds, and we are getting rather shaky on the weather question. Dear old probs., please do "hold up your gun ip" for a day or two longer, and give us a breathing spell. We understand that one of the New Or leans fire companies proposes to visit Char lotte on the occasion of the Centennial cele bration, provided suitable arrangements can be made. The company, we are told, has an engine which cost $20,000. We hope they will come. Died, 1 , r Yesterday morning at 8 o'clock, Miss Henrietta A. Woolen, The funeral will take place from Tryon Street M. E. Church this morning at 10 o'clock. The public is invited to attend.. Dr. Fox's Improvements. We erred slightly, in our notice on Sun day morning in reference to the buildiDgs which Dr Fox is erecting on his property. He will build eight semi-attached villas six on Poplar street, looking toward the side of the First Presbyterian Church, and two just around tbe corner, on Fifth street. He will also build four cottages on Sixth street, in the same neighborhood. Mr. W Challenger has the contract to do the work r The New Gas Company, t i A letter received yesterday j from New York, by Capt. F. S. Wolfe, stated that the contract for the pipes, tanks, machinery, fec. for the "Centennial Gas Light Company of Charlotte," has been given out and i now being filled, and a contract has been made for the laying of the pipes. The gentleman who is managing the affairs of this company, writes that if no untoward circumstance oc curs, the company will be in operation in from 60 to 90 days. ? ' Confined to His Home., u f j We regret that His Honor Mayor David son is confined to hid room by & right severe illness, crowing out of a cold. In conse quence of his s:ckness,no business was trans acted in the Mayor's office yesterday,1 and the Board of Aldermen, which shoul i have met last night in regular session, did not convene, we nope tne juayor win soon do quite well again. . . . . We saw a man slip on a bananna peel,- ly ing on thf pavement yesterday morning and after clutching desperately in the ;air for some unseen object, sit -down with '-a force and suddenness, which has never been equalled since Charlotte was incorporated as a town. As he arose and walked, off, he gave utterance to the largest and most varied assortment of profanity which is kept on hand in the city. j But, seriously the throwing of peelings of any kind, on the pavements, should not be indulged in. There are instances where per sons have been seriously hurt, and have even had limbs broken by slipping on them arid falling, and no one should, through his own carelessness, subject his neighbor to such a risk. Compliments to Charlotte Vocalists. One night last week there ws a concert at the Peace Institute in Raleigh. , Two ypmg ladies of this city figured in it, and of their singing the State Agricultural Journal, says : 'Miss Katie Tate, whose voice-is known to our Raleigh people, sang in her best vein two solos the first 'Darling,' one of Mil lard's exquisite songs, and the other 'lima' from Arutiti, a more artistic and difficult air. Miss Tate is a brilliant executant, and her voice, a delightful soprano,, shows not only compass, delicacy and power, but the highest culture. 'The Raft' by Pinsuti, was sung by Miss Clara Yates, of Charlotte. Her voice is one of those rare and rich contraltos that thrills and enthralls, and sang with gr?8t fueling and was listened to in rapt silence. The exquisite duet, 'Parting Kiss,' brought in Mrs. Baumann's fine and well cultivated voice and was admirably sang." The Southern Mechanic. We have just issued 'from our office the first numberjof this truly valuable little paper It is an enterprise published by by the Erie City Iron Works, and is intended mainly as an advertisement for their machinery, and will be circulated gratuitously over ' the Southern States. This company haye a branch of their es tablishment in Charlotte,, where they jiow have in store one portable engine oW de tached engine, one stationary engine, single and double saw mills with eureka, head blocks, gang saw tables, several corn mills, and any quantity of circular, saws. Any thing in their line, if not in store can be or dered and received within a week. One ad vantage offered by this branch house here, is that any piece of machinery, in case of breakage, can be duplicated in a few henrs See their advertisement in another column. The Opera House This Evening'. "' Ed win Adams t and hi s troupe Vvill arriyo; in Charlotte this evening , at 6 o'clock by special train, and the play will probably be gin about 8 or 8:30. ' We have said so much about uldams that it is useless to say more. We do not know how his support is, but know that the part of Phillip Ray will be well sustained, for it is taken by ; Edwin Browne. We observe, also, that Sally. Par tington is with the company,, Of course, however, the most of the interest wilt centre around Adams, and his reputation warrants our people in raising their expectations high.
