The Meeting Yesterday Programme fce 3: Pursuant to notice a majority of the gen eral committee of arrangement, consisting of all the committees heretofore appointed. for a proper observance of the approaching Centennia! Celebration : met at the ' Court House on Thursday,- to hear suggestions from the Executive Committee,- and deter mine definitely upon the wity and manner' in which said celebration shall be carried out. Dr. Jos. Graham chairman, cx officio being absent, Capt.S. B. Alexander, was called to the chair; and T. W Dewey, W. J. Yates, and Charles R. Jones were ' appointed secre taries. , ' " Upott a call ef ihe foil oft the dfrTerent committees, a niajority were found to be present, and the meeting thereupon5' perma nently organized, with the officers as above, stated. On motion T W Dewey, was instructed to purchase a book in which shall be recorded the proceedings of each meeting of' the Executive Committee. . - The various committees were called on for reports. The committee on speakers, through their chairman, Gov. Vance, re ported that they had resolved to have two speakers, one from North Carolina and one from Tennessee. As y t no selection had been made. The committee on subscriptions reported through their chairman , Gen. J A Young that they had had two meetings : prepared and distributed a circular, calling upon the people to aid in furnishing means to make the celebration what it ousht to be. On motion this committee, and the Finance committee, were merged and made the com mittee of Ways and; Means, four including the chairman, to constitute a quorum. The Press committee, W J Yates, chair man, reported that they had had an informal meeting, but had declined to do any thing until a definite programme had been adopt ed, as their action was largely dependent on that. The committee 011 Fire-works, and mili tary companies, J H Orr, chairman, reported that they had had one meeting, but that ac tion had been defem d until after theadoption of the programme.' On motion of Coi. H C Jones this committee take charge of and arrange the music for the occasion. Adopt ed. U The committee to canvass the county re ported through Col. H Jones, their chairs man, that little had been done, but that his committee would go ' vigorously to work, after the adoption of the programme. Many of the county auxiliary committees reported through their respective chairmen that the people throughout the county were very enthusiastic on the subject, and would respond liberally to aid in defraying the ex penses whenever called dit. These ommit tees like most of the others were' waitine until theadoption of a programme. " Rev W P Williams, as chair mad of the auxiliary committee from Dewese Township after offering an apology for the other gen tlemen of the committee, .Rev. Dr. ..Phillips and H P Helper Esq. reported that little had as yet been done, as they were waiting for instructions front the executive commit tee. He pledged bis township to do as much as any other township in the county. Mr Williams in a few brief, but pointed remarks, referred in forcible and eloquent terms to the importance of a proper celebration of the approaching centennial. ; m disbussion haying arisen in regard to the duties of the auxiliary township com mittees, Gen. J . A Young, ' moved that thi name of the first gentleman in each of these committees, be'reedgnized as the chairman of said committee, and that such one of these subordinate committees be authorised' to so enlarge or contract the number of their' res-1 pective committees, so as to acoompiisn the best result to their owrLiajUs faction, dis cretion and judgment, the end being to prop- erlyi arouse t he - people to a ense of their uuty in the due: observance of the day, and to raise contributions to carry 'out thepro- jrjramme. ; . 1 . As all Charlotte knows, Bright Dewey passed in his checks last Saturday,' and was gathered to his fathers. The object which has incurred "the deep damnation of his taking off," was a monster mastiff which, for or without cause as i he case may be, seized him by the nape of the neck, shook him until he was as limp as a dish-rag, then flung him over his right shoulder and left him to perish miserably on the highway. Among Blight's numerous friends was one whose attachment for him was peculiarly warm; the muses took up their abode with this friend, and, inspired by their presence, he utters the following wail. Listen to it : I am sad and lonely without the dog, And know not which way to go. For he was the joy and pride of my heart, And I loyed him, I loved him so ! When the bright and beautiful spring is come,' And gone are the ice (?) and snow (?), I wilt make him a grave in a quiet spot, Where tl.eeyening zephyrs blow. Action fur Enticing Away an Employee. Yesterday, a civil suit was tried before Justice W. F. Davidson, on an in dictment under the act of Assembly mak ing it a misdemeanor to entice an employee from the service of his employer. The de fendant was adjndged to have violated r the law, and a' 'fine .of $100 was placed upon him. The matter was afterwards comprom ised,' however, and the fine remitted. communicate.
