About nine o'clock when , the .streets were filled people returning from Church a man was seen running' down the sidewalk on Tryon street from the T C Smith & Co., drug store toward the Charlotte Hotel, and two men shooting at him. Four or five shots were fired, one passing through a crowd of gentle men in front of the Charlotte Hotel and embedding itself irTil wuidow sill cf the building, another, hit the -porch of Dr Miller's house about where his family usually sit in the . evening. We learn that the shots were fired at a negro who had stolen something . at the Air-Line depot and the parties shooting had a warrant for his arrest but" we have been unable to get their names. It matters little what, the negro had doneV the con duct of those shooting at him is repre hensible in the extreme and such reck less conduct shonld not go unpunished. It is a great wonder no one was killed or injured. We hear a ball did pass through the sleeve of a young man re turning from church. Scaly. Yesterday as we were, passing Mose cruse s nan market, some one - sung out, "Hello you," we tamed around, not mat our name u yon, but we turned, any body would have done the same, whenVmarr: made some very mysterious motions which we at last comprehended, and we went to- ward"lliiiiwlien he lifted a cloth'jtnd revealed tit our delighted eyes a spTen- did lot of "Red - Horse," fresh " from Uncle Dick Bozzell's traps, on' the "Classic Catawba," he then selected two ot uis largest and gave us one apiece, consequently we breakfast on red horse j.hia morning. Tile KaleigU Rescae Fire Company Has held a meeting, and decided not to attend the Mecklenburg Centennial. Their reason for such determination is based upon what they consider the bad treatment they have received at the hands of the Rich mond & Danville Railroad Company, in refusing them the use of a flat car, for the transportation of their engine and hose, and that they could not thin it of attending -a Centennial without it, as they would be as useless as artillery without cun, and in conclusion, they say : - "To the gallant Fire Department of Char lotte, we send you our neartlelt thanks foi yonr kind and generous invitation to par ticipate in the leslivities or your Centen nial, and while we may not be with, yon in a body, rest assured the mind's eye will wander back with joy, gladness and grati tude for your kind, generous and open hearted welcome extended to us four years ago, such as only . occurs once in the life time of a fireman;: and while we would be pleased to be with, you, circumstances over which we have, no control alone prevent US. . . , . MEMORIAL DAY. HOW IT WAS CELEBRATED CHARLOTTE IN Probably in no city of the Sunny South, is there a deeper interest taken in the proper observance of memorial day than in Char- Iotty; . By 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, a large crowd of people assembled in ard around the grove at the 1st Presbyterian church, The ladies and little children came laden with flowers, to pay homage to the fallen braves. At 20 minutes past 4 o'clock, the procession moved from the ground in the order as published in"' Sunday's Obsibvke, but it was headed by no- band, (which the members of the band explain elsewhere), The fire companies In their new uniforms, the "Zouayes" in their picturespue attire, the handsome cadets of the Military Insti tute in their Confederate gray, and the la dies in all their beauty and loveliness com bined, to make the scene on the cemetery ground exceedingly beautiful and impres sive. Near ' the centre of the grovnds. platform had been erected, upon which were seated the ladies, officers of the iemOrial Association, Rev. Dr. Chapman, of the Charlotte Institute for Young Ladies, Rev, Theodore Whitfield, Gen. T. L. Clingham and Col. E. A. Otborne. General D. H. ' Hill, the Chief Marshall, announced thai the ceremonies would commence with music A beautiful bymn was then sung by a select choir of ladies and gentlemen, Mr. R. 5. rhifer playing an accompanimnent on an srgan, which had been conveyed to the cemetery grounds. . After the music,- Dr. Chapman offertdoneof the most beautiful and impressive prayers we have ever heard. His appeal for the ''widows and orphans of the lost cause," was especially eloquent. The prayer was followed by an appropriate memorial chant." ' General; Hill then an nounced that Col. Osborne, who bore upon his body the marks of xtany a, hard lough t field, would deliver a short address, and read the names oi the soldiers of Jecklenburg county who died In the service of their country. Col. Osborne said : It is a sad pleasure thus to call over the names of our beloved dead. And if to their souls it was given to behold the scenes of earth, with what deep saisiaction and ap proval, must they: regard our . pious work this day 1 Or could the spirits of the de parted be woed to leave their place of -. rest, and visit again the abodes of men, we feel aisured that those dear ones, whose names We called: and the hundreds whose names are yet uncalled, would not refuse a ready response to "the 'deep and earnest yearning that fills our hearts for them. The ifemonal Association havei bad the name of each sol: dier from Jtfecklenburg county, who lost his life-in the service of his country daring the late war, printed in large letters in the centre of a handsome shield,' made of pasteboard and tastefully trimmed with evergreens, The shield having each soldiers name, was placed over his grave where the soldier was buried in the cemetery, and the shields bear ing the names of those . who - were buried elsewhere, arranged in a pyramid on . a mound hi the centre of the grounds, which mound was surmounted by a large wooden cross painted white, in imitation of mar Die, Everything gave evidence of the untiring energy and exquisite taste of the ladies of the Memorial Association. After the sing ing of that old familiar doxology by the choir, the benediction was pronounced by the Rev. Theodore Whitfield, of the Baptist church. There was probably the largest crowd in the cemetery that had ever assembled there on a similar occasion. We heard it estima ted that there were not less than 2500 people on the gronnds. The. scene was. picturesque and beautiful in the extreme. . As we admir ed the beautiful flowers so tastefully arrang ed on the graves , we could but matter a wish that those fiowerswere perennial so that old mother earth might, through them, at each revolution upon her axis, shed dew drop tears oyer these, the noblest of her children.
