Gossip : The details for the transfer and remov al of the accounts of the Navy from Bannings to Clews & Co., was arrang ed at a midnighs meeting by Hunting ton, their cashier, the First National Bank and Secretary Robeson. Mj ."Merrill, while serving in South Carolina, received $21,400 reward under Gov. Scott's proclamation, for ferret ing out and convicting kuklux. Gen, Custer charges Maj. Merrill with tak ing a bribe from the accused before a court martial in Texas, of which he was Judge Advocate, This Merrill de nied before the Committee. Merrill is now on duty at the Centennial. In the Senate, the chair announced Boutwsll, of Massachusetts, Cameron, of Wisconsin, Oglesby, of Illinois, Bayard, of Delaware, and McDonald, of Indiana, as the committee to inves tigate the recent election in Missis sippi, htevenson introduced a bill concerning corporations engaged in the business of distilling; referred to the Committee on Finance. The Committee on Appropriations have agreed to appropriate $100,000 for light and fuel and board for wit ness fees in the regular deficiency bill, which they expect to pass this week. They will not report these items in a special bill, so there is ne immediate relief for government officers. The Privileges and Elections Com mittee did nothing. The House passed a bill extending the time in which indictments may be found to three years. This is intend ed to reach the safe burglary conspira tors. A message was received from the Senate that they are ready to receive the impeachment managers. ELECTIONS. democratic Success in Baton Rouge, Cincinnati and Denver Democrat ic Victory in Connccticnt, but by a Reduced Majority. Baton Rouge, April 4. The Demo crats elected their entire municipal ticket by a large majority. Norwich, April 4. Warl, Republi can, elected to Congress by 700 or 800 plurality. Hartfoed, April 4. The Senate stands : Democrats 17, Republicans 4; House, Democratic majority 30. 137 towns show a Republican gain of 1.G13. Cincinnati, April 4. The Democrats elected their entire ticket with the ex ception of one member of the Board of Public Works. Hartford, April 4. The Republi cans carried the 4th, Gth, 14th and 8th Districts, and the Democrats the rest. The House is Democratic by about 40 majority. Hartford county, 3 towns lacking, gives Robinson, Republican, 9,401, Ingersoll, 10,557, Smith, Tem perance 261, and Atwater, Greenback, 379. New Haven, April 4. Denver, Col., April 4. In the municipal election yesterday, Doctor Buckingham, Democrat, was elected Mayor by 180 majority, over T. R. Crocker, Republican. The Republi cans elect 5 out of 6 Aldermen. OHIO Result of the Elections Republican Officers in Cincinnati. Cincinnati, April 4. Returns from 4 towns and cities in Ohio, show general Republican majorities.in 22 and Democratic majorities in 19. Thereat are evenly divided. Local questions entered so largely, that the result is no test of party strength. Washington, D. April 4. The Military Committee of the House has agreed to report the Fortifications Bill as it passed the Housel without amend ment. The Postmaster General anl At torney General wjre absent from the cabinet to- day. Total coinage for the month, 5 mil lions. The Virginia Consolidated Mining Company produced three mil lion in March. The Treasury Depart ment received two hundred thousand dollars in dimes and a hundred thou sand in quarters, to-day. The Treas ury circular issued Saturday was gen. eral. It orders the superintendents of all public buildings to-stop the fuel, light and water expenses, and dis charge all persons paid from the ap propriation for these purposes on re ceipt of the circular. The matter was discussed m Cabinet to-day, but no remedy was found. The circular doe3 not apply to post offices kept else where than in public buildings, Gen Custer has been recalled by the War Department Committee. He did not give information of a looseness in the po3t traderships because an army order, dated March, 1873, forbade it. Such things must go through regular channels, and would have been pigeon holed in the Secretary of War's office. Gen Hazen tried it, and was sent to Fort Buford, where there is no civil ization, but what an officer takes with him. The people of Kansas are agitating against mixed schools which the last Legislature legalized, The law is dis regarded at Leavenworth. The Senate, in executive session, re jected Dana as Minister to England. House. The Committee on Military Affairs is directed to enquire and re port the officers travelling in foreign countries. The impeachment managers asked leave to retire to present the Senate in formal manner the impeachment arti cles ; granted. The correspondence regarding Con sul General Seward, now Minister to China, was referred to the Committee on the expenses of the State Depart ment. Schlugher, Chairman of the Frontier Texas troubles, reported a bill to pro vide for the protection of frontiersmen on the lower Rio Grande. It authori zes the President to sanction and keep on the Rio Grande River from its mouth to the northern boundaries of the State of Tallaulipo, above Loreeds, two regiments of cavalry in addition to the infantry for garrison duty, and add each troop up to the full strength of 100 privates. It also authorizes the President, in view of the inability of the Mexican government to prevent the inroads of lawless parties from Mexico into Texac, to allow the troops to cross the Rio Grande and use such means as may be found necessary to recover the stolen property, and to check the raids, guarding, however, against unnecessary injury to the peaceable inhabitants of Mexico. The bill was made the special order for the 20th of April, from day to day until disposed of. A bill regarding the im ployment of special counsel requiring that the Judge shall certify to the ne cessity and fees, passed. Night ses sion. Senate. Sherman reported House bill without amendment, authorizing the Secretary of .the Treasury to pay the -Alabama Claims judgments; laid over. SOUTH CAROLINA. The Branchville Homicide Pronoun ced Felonious The Murderer Es caped. Special Dispatch to the Observer. Brakchville, April 4. An inquest was held to-day over the dead body of Rufus Johnson, at this place, who was killed by J. W. Meadows on the 3d, at Sixty-Six Turnout. The jury, consist ing of eleven colored and one white, brought in a verdict of willful and felonious killing. Meadows has fled and his whereabouts are unknown. S. FLASHES. Chicago, April 4. Ex-Supervisor Dan'l W. Mann, and ex-Collector T. Bridges, have been indicted. New Yottfc, April 4. The Cotton Exchange has adopted, a resolution recognizing the usefulness' of thesig nal service, and calling upon Con gress to organize it on a more fixed and substantial basis. CRIMES AND CASUALTIES. A Man Kills His Son Murder and - Suicide Marine Disasters. Columbus, O , April 4. Patrick Pick ney, a laborer, made his son, aged 17, get on his knees and promise not to play with an objectionable boy. While in this position, Pickney killed his son with a shot gun. St. Louis, April 4. Thomas Tracy, of Boonerville, III., to-day killed him self, his wife and daughter, aged six. A barge crushed against the Boone ville bridge to-day. Ten men were aboard, and four were saved. The lost were negroes. The barge had ten thousand bushels of corn aboard. Athens, April 4. The steamer Ari ganti from Piracis for an Italian port, sunk to-day from a collision with the English stsamer Hilton Castle, losing 9 crew and 20 passengers. SPECIAL NOTICES.
