There is perhaps no man in North Car

siasm among the Democracy of the
State than Alfred M. Scales. Pure and
spotless as a politician; upright and
honest as a gentleman, noted, too, for
his sterling christian character,his nomi
nation will sweep North Carolina with
a wave of enthusiasm which would
bear everything before it Old Confed
erates would put on the political war
paint, and rally to the support of their
old commander without regard to par
ty with a zeal which would only be the
precursor of success, and the Republi
cans would receive a back-set from
which they would not recover until af
ter the election, when they saw their
party borne down and buried by this

special says Conkling and Logan for
Grant, Dennison and Foster for Sher
man, Hamlin and AV. E. Chandler for
Blaine, held a conference last evening,
lasting five hours. The object was to
see if .all the parties could not agree to
a temporary organization. After a full
explanation on the part of those op
posed to the unit rule of their position
and strength, of which they felt sure,
Conkling yielded the naming of the
temporary chairman to th,e anti-Grant
men, pledging himself thit Cameron
would carry out the agreement in good
faith. This extended to an agreement
not to move a substitute for the one
named by the committee for chairman.
