A few days ago The Observes coni tained a report of the robbery of Mr. Joseph Prim's residence, on Church street, whereby Mr. Bowles, a young man who resides with Mr. Prim, lost nearly ; $300 in ' cash. Yesterday morning another and a more serious case of burglary . was reported. Mr. W. Fi Buchanan, who keeps a bar at the corner of Church and Trade streets, was robbed Friday night of 407 in cash and a gold watch valued at $85. The burglary was committed at . Mr. '.Buchanan's v residence,'? otf Church "street, - between' Third and Fourth streets,- and the valuables were secured from a room which was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Buchanan and a nurse". - A more daring robbery has possibly never been committed in this city?: The facts as we learn them from Mr. Buchanan are substantially aa follows t'.n - Mrs..; Buchanan nas been sick for several weeks past, and her condition has been such as to require the alv most constant attention of her hua-' band. - Friday afternoon Mr. Buch anan was just on the point of leaving his place of - business to deposit his money , in the banawhea he re ceived; a message calling .him ' to the v bedside .Of his wife, and to which he responded immediately. taking his money home ' with. him. He carried in his pocket $407 in cash, whit tle placed in a trunk in his room, intending to take it . to the bank 'on his first opportunity next morning. : Mrs , Buchanan was in a suffering condition and her. husband remained at her.-bedside until one o'clock at night, when be lay down at the foot of the bed and fell asleep? A nurse was in the room at theime, but she dozed off in an arm chair'.and in this way the occupants of the room passed the remainder of the 'night undisturbed. When : they waked yesterday morning, Mr. Buc lanan saw that the trunk in which he had placed his money was standing open,' and hurriedly making an . inrestiga tion he found that he had been rob bed during the night of $407 in cash, besides a gold watch which he had taken as security for a debt of $85, Continuing hia. investigations, Mr. Buchanan discovered that the house was in perfect order, ' but the back door was standing ajar, showing the means of exit by the . burglar. Mr. Buchanan, . before ' retiring Friday night, had taken the - precaution ' to secure' all the doors and ' windows,' ayu eems iu ueawtutwitaotuiat the barglar was secreted ui the house .kI t:mA u, Ttnrhan.n 1v.V-m1 nn as the baek door was not forced and could not o&erwjse have been open- ed except from the inside. This bur glary was one of 0e npet -daring ever perpetrated in ouj" cit ' The trunk, rasijotj Jockedi it jrtas secured by a latcn which no one ex cept a person familiar with it, osuld have unfastened without breaking open the trunk. The burglar opened and ransacked the trunk with' three persons sleeping around him. .. In addition to this burglary, - an other -was reported yesterday. A boarding house was raided by bur glare and two rooms were entered. The guest of one room was robbed of $7 in cash, . and a guest of the other room lost $5. It is to be hoped that the guilty parties will be captured in time to secure their arraignment be fore Judge Meares. at the December term of the Criminal Court. The Ite Robert w'ehnsten. The body of the late Robert John- ! ston, son of. Bev. B. -Z. Johnston, : passed through this city yesterday on the. 12:40 train from the North, for Oastonia, whence it was conveyed to Lincolnton for burial. The body was in charge of Dr. ; D. C.' Mebane, now of Wilkesbarre,Pa.,but former ly a resident of this city. Dr; Me bane, who will be ; remembered by ; our people as a former clerk at Wris ton's drug store, has been located at Wilkesbarre as a practicing pbysici- i cian for about 7 years past, and Mr. Johnston hoarded at his house. An Obsebvsb reporter met Dr.-Mebane at the depot yesterday .and . learned the particulars of the death of Mr. Johnson, which ' are briefly told as follows. Mr. Johnston, was : in the emplo of. the Delaware &, Hudson I Ca . Company, on Wednesday last, I the day of the fatal accident,he was at worir with a number of companions, I m erecting a new frame., building for I oomoanr; " . While thus engaged I - aiecyctoneimme tip.and the workme fled from the building, followed by a shower of flying timbers. jAt a point ! just 84 feet from the building, .Mr, Johnston was struck on the head by a flying plank and . was ftlled to the earth. ' The cyclone lasted but for a few moments, and when it had pass ed by,- Mr. Johnston's companions ran to his assistance, but found that ! he was dead. The plank had struck i him on the back of -his head, crushs 1 ing in his skull and producing a l wound that caused instant death. Dr. Mebane speaks in the highest terms of the character of the young man, and savs that -he was held in the highest esteem by his Pennsylvania acquaintances. . Dome with His Bride, r Mr. W. O. Holly, Gaston county, diedrat the Home and Hospital in this city, one day during the past week, under a surgical opera tion. The patient arrived' here about a week ago, suffering from an affec I tion known as cystic tumor and ihe I disease was. so far. advanced that her I casQ Wa9 regarded from the first rby 1 our- physicians as ' hopeless.- Jpoji J her arrival here, several of our phy I slcianS. were summoned to make an I aminaion of the case; and they I old- that she was.1 suffering fronv 1 tumor, aggravated by a dropsical af I lection. The history of the patient 1 soows that about five years ago she was prostrated by an attack- of ty phoid . fever, ' and that immediately after she: recovered from"; the fever she was afflicted withi pains in her stomach. ' These pains continued for three years, when she. began to sho w signB of a . dropsical affection. The local physicians treated liw this disease, and vtapped'Tier: at stated intervals, but to no effect. She con tinued to growworse,r and ; finally, upon the advieSEJJtJriendj came to CharlclLa tot treatment. When she arrived here; her disease was at its. worsOf Her Vhody Vas swollen to three times- its natural size, and it was; eyide4trr that' death was near at hand unless relief could be secured by a surgici'idperation. After a diagnosis of her case, v: the physicians were extremely .'doubtful about the success of an operation,' but at the earnest solicitation of the patient, who realized that in this lay her only chance forliftY the opera tion was decided upon. ? -U: - Seven physicians, four .of whom were from the citv and three from the county, gathered ; by appoint ment;, juid the 'patient was placed under the . knife. The physicians found that the diagnosis was correct, and that the patient was suffering from cystic tumorjwhich. Strictly speakings is a cluster ofabdominal tumors. , As a result or tlra. opera tion, the; patient was relieved!' of a masa ' of i matte', fluid and solid. weighing altogether 70 pounds;V The fluid matter amounted to six gallons. weighing 55 pounds, while the solid matter, or tumor cluster, weighed. 15 pounds. - The operation was skilfully performed, .but it was scarcely con cluded when the patient died: " The ease is one of great interest to the medical - fraternity throughout the country, and is one of a character that is seldom encountered in medi cal jurisprudence. Mr. John James, .general superin tendent of the rail way mail service, has. a way of shaking up. the posfal .clerks that -was jinknowa JLefi a XLa advent of a "Democratic administra tion. The postal clerks are now kept i constantly on the lookout for Mr. James' sharp stick. The General has just notified a clerk' in ' the ninth di vision that his salary has been re duced : by the Postmaster General, from $800 to $200 per annum for the i month of November,1886,for refusing to obey the instructions of, and en gaging in a personal encounter with, the clerk in charge of his crew. At the same timp. notice has been served on the clerks that " a practice exists with some olerks . to refrain from i checking errors against connecting lines with a view to forcing recipros cal action on the part of clerks on such lines and therehy . protecting their own records. This is not only in violation of Section 729 of the In structiona, hut oqe peculiarly threat ¬ ening to the dioiplihe and efficiency j of the service and will not be tolera ted in the least.w The Postmaster General has directed the removal of a clerk in the fourth division for fail-1 ure to comply with the regulations in this respect, the fact indeed being admitted by the clerk who sought i only to excuse it.
