At anjr rate, there was considerable pressure, and in spite of covering- through eommlsskf houses for over-Sunday, prices worked down -luring the morning to a net decline of about - te I points. Around midday the mar ket was rallied slig-htly by the covering of early sellers and advanced to about the opening' figures, after which it eased off ev little, being finally steady at a decline of i to f points. The official advices from the Southern sret markets showed slightly lower quo tations. Receipts at the porta to-day were 4?,s7S bales, against 8,U last week and 12,017 last year. For the week, S30.000 'bales, against 385,167 last week nnd 300, 23. lust year. " MILLER CO.'S REPORT. -'' i Condition of the Cotton. Coffe, Stock and Grain Markets By Private Wire to F. B. Futures In Liverpool were decidedly weak and closed 9 points lower than last night. Spots also were marked down points, but as we have seen, with excellent sales. Of course. It can be argued that big sales on a de cllnlpg market are a sure evidence of weakness of holders, but It Is gratifying nt .least to find that the cotton being un loaded Is finding a safe lodgttlr place. Quite a striking feature of the big sales Is the quantities being taken for specu lation and export, but practically all for export, showing that the continent Is quite ready to stock up at ruling prices. Look ing squarely at the situation, the bears seem to have the better end of it for the -present as It would rqulre only moderate amount of selling by holders to cause a sharp decline. Klnston, Dec, 16, John Ashley, a col ored brakeman on ah Atlantic & North Carolina freight train fell under the wheels of the cars this morning about 11 o'clock and was seriously, probably fatally Injured. The right arm wss cut off at the shoulder and there was also a fracture of the skull at the right temple. The accident occurred at te McLewan street crossing in this town, and was caused by Ashley, who was hanging on a ladder of the car being dragged from his perch by the fence of a stock ren and thrown under the wheels. The Injured man was taken immediately to a physician's office and an operation performed, but the ex tent of the Injury Is so great Utile hope is entertained of his recovery. Ashley was a new mail, commencing work for the company only yesterday and very little could be learned from his fellow workmen concerning . him He was apparently about 25 years old. The railroad company through their agent here and attorney Is having every needful attention rendered the Injured man and every effort Is being made to save his life. J. 8. Bacbc & Co. 'a Cotton Letter. By Privato Wire to L. A. Dodsworth A Co Brokers. . . ' v, ru. JW." 1 liC mm hi inuw, resistance, to' f resture. Speculative sentlw menujnis morning was plainly oearlsh on the theory that the ginners' report, due to come toward the middle of hext week, would fully confirm the big crop esti mates; that the scattering reports of in- creasea spot onenngs in the South fore shadowed a more general weakening of holders, and that several good-slxed stop orders had been planted around the pre vious low level which bear pressure might uncover. Operations for a decline wexs also encouraged by the beartshness of the cables as concerned with the Liverpool future market, although the big sales of spot cotton, amounting U9 13,000 Wiles at the decline of 9 polnfs. suggested that British spinners were willing to lay In supplies at the current level. But after opening 2 to 4 points lower snd Increasing the loss to a matter of some B to 8 points under hammering by local bears, the mar ket showed steadiness, and in the early arternoon tne tone was a little steadier, the market having rather an over-sold appearance. To our mind the reports of freer spot offerings have arisen from the liquidation of a few scattering holders at ports. It remains to be seen what In fluence the ginners' report will have on holders. ir the crop is aa large as the government nas estimated the amount ol cotton ginned to December 14th should a! least show 11,600.000 bales from a legiti mate trade standpoint, it would seem that the market could be held for a time at any rate around the present figures for spinners are showing a disposition to buy. but with speculation so bearish It Iooks as tnough the ginners- report would he made the basis for an effort to secure rurtner declines. j. b.
