The bill relates to drugs ' ai well aa articles of food, and Mr. Mc- Cumber eaui that to adulteration of both "la almply appalling." In further j, remarks Tuesday he read from the re- port of the pure-food commissioner of bis own Stat, telling of the discovery . in" articles of food principally canned good offered for sale In North Da- kota, of borax, boraclo acid, sodium aulphlt. copper salts, alumnlum salts ..... ... t . ji ... hliuu.iiu mu.iA aM.w j - Ther ia no doubt about the fact " UuU " U ' adulteration of food has reached an- alarming length, and Mr. MoCnmber made the excellent point that fb States cannot protect the ! peopla ta this matter but that this must be done If done at all by tne national government. Many of these adulterations are. In a high degree. j Injurious to health, and the consumers, innocent purchasers, who do not know what deadly things they are buying. are entitled to all the protection the law can throw around them. It is not the retailers, nor yet the whole 5 tale dealers, who are at fault, but the manufacturers, the canners, the pack ; era, etc , But why is there not in this bill : some provision of protection for tne consumers of liquor? Ther ar many who do not believe that th estl miit Is rounded upon responsible au thority If not. If, the returns were doctored before or after' they reached the Dcirtmnl.'att Irreparable. wron has been done the cotton farmers and every business Interest of the South. There ar also many who believe that the figures leaked before they were of ficially given out, and wor used by th gamblers who were In possession Ofsthetn in advance, to fleece others whoer not. All of Which suggests the inquiry. Why should the govern ment assume it to be Its business, any how, to gather statistics of the cotton crop while it is being marketed and give out it findings? We have never heard that the farmers demanded this of It, and do not conceive that It re dounds to their benefit. What class other than the gamblers can this ad vantage? Is it any proper function of a department of government to pro mulgate a guess at th amount of any crop before its harvesting and prepara tlon for market have been completed? Representative Livingston is hitting in the right direction, and If the Inqui ry which he has set on foot shall result In the entire uprooting of the system of crop-guessing, so much the better tor the Bouth and for all legitimate Interests everywhere. "We point with pride," to borrow the language of the party platforms to the array of line advertisements tn this morning's paper. U Is not unpre cedented. On a number of occasions heretofore this record has been sur passed, but It is a- creditable showing that Is made to-day. The Observer goes Into the hands of the best people of Charlotte and the State, people who are able to buy things. This Is the reason that advertisers use Its coumns so freely and are witling to pay living prices for the privilege. The ladies are holding the boards at the present time. The war In the East has been retired from the footlights and all Interest is centered upon Mrs. Casele Chadwick, of Cleveland, and Miss Nan nie Patterson, of New York. There Is always somebody or something of up permost and continuing Interest who or what will It be when these esteem ed ladies shall have strutted their brief hour? And so Mr. Crumpacker has paid a visit to the President, has confessed his abandonment of hope of a reduc tion of Southern representation by this Congress, and hied him off to Indiana. The Indications are thut we shall hear less and less of this scheme as time goes on. BRIEFS. Mloor Happenings in and About the City Events, of a Day.
