JW STOCKS. l&u-Iy Adanc in .the Nature of Teet ; In ' Operations Abrupt Termlnsv tiun of Engagements of' Gold for ylUi:port..: v 'M-f lTiA JSTewTork," April 17lThf market for stocks followed the sam course to day that It did yesterday. . The early advance appeared to be In the nature of testing operations and the Indif ference of the outside response to this proyed. so far disappointing to ths professlonai ' element. which was re sponsible for the movement, that they retreated very , generally ' from their position and resold their takings. For eign markets toad resumed operations to-day after their prolonged holiday before transactions were made in the New Tork market and a hopeful au gury -was drawn from the tranquility with which" New Tork'S large acqui sitions of gold were accepted. But the hope .was disappointed that the removal of the threat of an adverse Influence .from the London market would result in any considerable revi val of speculative Interest here. The conservative attitude maintained to wards the stock market had a par tial cause In the abrupt termination of the engagements of gold for import. Sterling exchange waa sustained above the level where gold should be ship ped at a profit even with the allow ance under the United States Treas ury plan of deposits of government funds with the banks against engage ments of gold for" Import. The soft ening- of our own money market was so ' pronounced as to lessen tne at traction for securing additional gold. The call loan rate fell away below per cent, before the active leading period of the day was over and rates on the time loans relapsed to 6 1-4 per cent, for sixty and 00 days and to 5 per cent, for 0 and months. The Indifference of the stock market to the easing of the money market Is due to the feeling that other needs re main to be supplied before It will be wise to embark large credits In spec ulative commitments. Easier money Is looked for furthering flotation of the securities which have been wltheld in waiting for a better market oppor tunity. The attempt to put up prices of stocks met with more immediate obstruction In the form of large offer ings, the source of which left room for the suspicion that liquidation of the long holdings was In progress. Read ing suffered something from the un certainty over the anthracite labor outlook and from the reports of riot ous outbreaks In the coal regions. Pennsylvania on the contrary was con spicuously strong, although this was accompanied by a continual feeding out of the convertible bonds of the company, The Pennsylvania subsidi ary stocks followed it in rotation with advances while selling was in prog ress at other points. The appearance of speculative liquidation In Amalga mated Copper was of large sentimen tal effect. Prices were at the lowest during the final hour but closed with some recovery and with an irregular tone. Bonds were steady. Total sales par value. $3 200.000. IT. H. new 4s declined 1-4 per cent, on call. Total sales were 93MO0 shares in cluding: Copper, 137,600; Cotton OH, 200; Ice, 24,800; Tobacco, 200; Anacon da, 69,200; C & O.. 0.SOO; L. A N., 2,000: N. Ellis A Co.'s Cotton Letter. Special to The Observer. New Orleans, April 17. -Liverpool ad vanoed 8 points on the spot and futures closed 3 to 4 points higher than last week. The American markets have been dull but notably firm and the strength is tracable not to speculative optimism but to a steady demand fer good sptnnable cotton which continues to command as great a premium on contracts as at any previous time this season, as far as the speculative public Is concerned, their leaning Is to the bear side and we think a very considerable short Interest has al ready been put out In new crops, on the theory of a large acreage and possibility of a record crop. Vhlle the weather and isrop development continue favorable no advance of Importance Is likely but uny unfavorable chunge In this respect would he the signal for active competition oil the part of spinners, speculators and the outstanding snort Interest, In which case u rapid rise in price would be inevitable. As it is. we are Inclined to look for a gradual Improvement In prices until they reach a point that will check the cur rent large consumption. Otherwise, sup plies at the end of the senium would be dungerously small. C. P. ELLIS ft CO. Uubbanl Bros. A Co.'s Cotton Letter. Special to The Observer. New York. April 17. Due unchanged on our close If Thursday Liverpool came some two to three points higher tills morning, and in response, our market opened at a sharp advance, with the near positions In good local demand on the call. Commission and wire houses hud some realising orders, and these supply Ing the early demand, prices ruled steady around the opening figure, the weekly report at noon a considered favorable and Induced further scattered selling of the new crop options. Hester's visible supply figures were less bullish than for some weeks Influenced by the favorable weather and the absence of outside speculation, the local feeling l)i came rather for lower prices, but In view of the case with which the early offerings from commission houses were absorbed, there was no marked pressure.
