The difficulty occurred in -front of the Hotel Phoe nix. Mr. Dalton was en route to dinner when Mr. Williams stepped out of the hotel office and, after an exchange of a few words, struck Dal ton across the head with his cane, ataggerlng him. The stick broke and Dalton began using his first .with telling effect upon the face of his antagonist. Inflicting one or two scars near ono eye. The men were sep arated by a policeman, before any serious damage was done. It appears that an unpleasantness between the two men started Saturday afternoon during a conversation over the long distance telephone about some busi ness with the bank. WlMconsIn Pastor Addrcsse Spoctatora at a Nunday Ball Game In llelolt irgea oimervance of law. Belolt, Wla., ' Special, lath, to New York Herald. The novelty of a religious address between Innings at a Sunday base ball game was given to a big Belolt crowd to-day, when the Rev. Josept Carden, rector of St Paul'a Episco pal church, one of the fashionable congregations of the city, preached on the diamond. The sermon was given at he request of the manage ment of the City League. Two games were scheduled, and when the first waa over Dr. Carden was .Introduced and ipoko for 17 minutes, using the fourth command ment V'r his text, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep It honly." The fact that It had been advertised that he would speak drew numerous prom inent citizens to attend who are not frequenters of Sunday games. Mr. Carden presented the rights of all men tq seek recreation on Sunday according to the dictates of their own conscience, and said as there waa a State law against playing ball on Sun day every person participating waa a law-breaker. Turning to Mayor Cun ningham, he said: "If I were Mayor of Belolt or the head official of tha county gamea would ba stopped until tha lwa were changed, and 1 wouldn't let any on buy liquor on Sunday, either." After discussing publto morale, Mr. Carden said poor men should be care ful to keep the law. as their viola tions made it easier for tha wealthy classes to violate the law and do greater damage than the poor men could do. t Mr. Carden took the meat trust to task, saying Its members were can ning hoofs and boms for working men to eat. ' - The preached said he considered the matter of Sunday observance a thing for individual discretion. Work ing men had as much moral and reli gious rights to be present there aa the wealthy men had to seek pleaaur and recreation In their automobiles. Mr. Carden spoke strongly agalnat Intemperance, saying It waa the worst evil working men had to contena with. He expressed sympathy with working men In their dally struggles and urged a high ideal In life. H thought they should try to obtain a law requiring weekly pay days and cash payments, Inatead of checks on hanks, to ba cashed In saloons or atorea. Mr. Carden cama to Belolt recent ly from Wlnthrop, Mass., and haa gained popularity with the men. It ia dpubtful If tha Sunday sermon will be repeated, however, for while tha speaker received the most respectful attention and waa heartily applaud ed, many "fans" are opposed to the Idea.
