It la understood that some big boats will be built dur ' Ing- the coming winter especially to compete In that race. ,The Indications vara that It will be second only In lm portance to a race for the Amerlca'i -cup. Is for a free-for-all race for boats under- forty feet racing , length, the boats to contest without .time allowance. North Carolina Dames of 1848, are endeavoring to nnd the names and addresses of all veterans of 4he -Mexican war, living In the State, especially .those drawing a pension of, only 111 per month, and the addresses and names of all wid ows of 'Mexican war veterans draw ing a pension of only IS per month. During the last session of Congress the Dames, of 'Monterey Camp agist ed over one hundred veterans of the war with Mexico to procure, a pen sion of 120 per month (we asked for 120) and over 25 widows of Mexican war veterane to a pension of 112 per month' in the district given them, the. two Carolina nd the two Vir ginias. ;' vi':?.:.--'i;Vi'r-"-,l We have yet to hear of a slngl petition for either veteran or wi4w. prepared by these Dame and prer aented-. by the Congressman in whoa district the petitioner lived, who fail ed to get this maximum Increase al lowed by Congress: . 120 for veteran and 111 for widows of veterans, y ; With only a - few , exceptions the Congressmen not only presented the bills to the House and had them sent to the Senate, but wereso Interested that they tried .to find all such vet erans and widows in their districts and also procure for those they found the Increased pension. . .. We hope that during the summer "Uncle Joe" haa had 4 new coat of "tar" put on his "heels" and .will, like all oar Tar Heels, work for the honor and glory of the Old North State and for the good Of . these -senior soldiers of our army, no matter where they are now living, nor how long it haa been since they left their native State. The pension laws are to. be revised during the coming session, and we have done what we could to remind all that these men who k fought the war with Mexico were United States soldiers, wearing the - United States army uniform, fighting under the Stars and Stripes Cor tnis country and- are as much a part of the Unit ed State army as any man who wore the blue in USl-lSeS. . On all laws referring to men who have fought in the United States army these1 veterans have a right to be Included. not discriminated against, as they have been for years, and should the "Great White uiar right this wrong, there will be many others who will say with the Presi dent, "You, Mr. Speaker, win be the next President ot'the United states," and work like Trojans to make this prophecy come true. ' So far there has been no general provision made, for Increasing the pension of the widows of Mexican war veterans, each pension haa to be Increased bvorlvete bllL It is against the law for anyone belonging to -the pension department to furnish names or addresses, -or furnish -any other Information de- ajred for the purpose pf increasing pensions, consequently we nave 10 procure these names and addresses in any way we can, and to be of any service they must be sent at once to the secretary of the North 'Carolina Damea of 1841, Mrs. V. C. Royster, Raleigh, as It is short session and what Is to be done must be done be fore Congress convenes, December 1, 10. The latest plan has been to write to the clerks of - the Superior Court of the ninety counties In the State, and in thla way new names and ad dresses are being received every day. but at the national reunion, Dames of 184 1 at Jamestown, September 28-24 ("Monterey Days"), we wish the report of Monterey Camp to excel the report of all other camps belong ing to the national organization and Dames of 1846, and the thing we are striving strenuously for ,Just now is that In this report we can say, "There Is not a veteraa of the ;war with Mexico living In North Carolina, hav Ing no other Income, who does not draw a pension of 1 29 per month, and there not a widow of a veteran of the war with Mexico living In North Carolina, In need, who is not drawing a pension of 812 per month If you. the reader of thla, know of the ' addresses of either . veterana or widows of veterans, please send them at once to our camp's secretary, and not only will you receive' the grati tude of the veterana and widows, but of all who are interested In them, among the Mrst being every Dame of 1848 inth wide, wide world, and of those In North Carolina in particular. witn many thanka to an for both assistance and interest, I am, . .' x ours to count on, - , JESSICA RANDOLPH SMITH.
