The . early disturbance in to-day's stock market was the residue of Saturday's un settlement and was caused by the fear aroused bv the feverish move mentn then. After It appeared that tia ulterior eonsoouences. were to be immediately forthcoming the mar ket resumed the more confident tone which was manifest earlier last week and which Is based, presumably, on the belief that liquidation has been completed. The Erie stocks were comparatively steady, thus removing the principal .element of the weak- nes shown in - Saturday's . market. This ana the absence ; of any con firmation of the trouble rumors were the negative forces making for the later Improvement of prices, A more positive factor working toward this ; wa an improvement in sentiment - ever the monetary outlook, not only here, but also abroad. The can loan 'market was rather stiffer. The Saturday bank statement dis closes that the present position of , the New York clearing house banks la not so far below -that at cor responding periods In previous years, ' as was the case for a long period, the surplus reserve in fact now stand ing above that at this time last year.
