BuKlnesa Bears Renew Attack London Loosens Up Vor New Tork Bfoney Market Fxic Again ' Weakens. " New York, Aug. 27. The specu lative sentiment revealed by the day's movements of stock prices was hesi tating and, shiftlne. as reflected by the constant turn In the tide. At the same ; time transactions were on a diminishing scale and were abandoned almost wholly to professional traders before the session had elapsed. The belief that the atock exchange would be closed on Saturday, as well as on Monday, In compliance with a peti tion In circulation amongst the mem bers, was a factor in the growing dullness of the market, owing to the well known disinclination of stock operators to enter on new commit ments on the eve of a prolonged holiday. It developed quite early in the seslpn that there was only a moderate disposition to follow up the buying movement which sprang up yesterday and after that the bears renewed attempts to depress prices and began again to circulate rumors Of i. money embarrassments, such as have i been a feature of their ac tivity, for some time past. The weakest period of the day occurred after trading for Ixndon account was completed. The easing of the London discount rale Is di rectly traceable to the Influence of the united States Treasury plan of relief for the money market, which gives assurance to foreign bankers that New York will not make exorbi tant demands upon their roKources, such as they have professed to fear. It is a singular result of this that the London money market has loosed Its purse strings to New York bor rowers as contrasted with the re cent severe discriminations exercised against that class, so that finance bills have made their appearance In con siderable volume in the foreign ex change market again and have aided materially In depressing rates there. The news that the Krle directors were to convene to-morrow and the likelihood that the dividend question would be determined renewed the weakness in those shares and was a factor In the unsettlement in the rest of the market. The final changes after the numerous fluctua tions were small and showed the room trading nature of the dealings. Bonds were irregular. Totals sales bonds par value. $1,168,000. - United. ' New York, Aug. 27, After a slight recession at the opening the market rallied, then gathered strength, clos ing steady at about the best prices on a better appreciation of the awaken ing of the trade to the meaning of the continued dry weather In Texas and the light receipts of new cotton. There is a renewed demand for early Sep tember shipments, which It is diffi cult to sucure as very high prices are now current In th 8outh. This ad vance Is due to the commercial sea sons which we have been repeating from day to day for the past three weeks and not to any upeculatlve movement. Speculators have been tinder. the depression In financial cir cles and unable to see that there were commercial conditions to be taken in to acoount. Of course the range of values is so high that few of the lead ing merchants have had th confi dence In the commercial conditions so ihat we think the long interest Is small and any demand must he sup plied from the now .crop.
