CHARLOTTE DAILY OBSERVER, MARCH 18, 1903. V COMMERCE AND FIXA KCE COTTON' MARKET SIORE ACTIVE. Sharp Brwk After Midday IYllows m' Steady Oiciiiiig Prices, How ever. The cotton . market was more active to-day with orlces weak and unsettled under llqui datlon and bear pressure on reports of easier Southern spot markets. ihe market closed steady hut at a net de cline' of to 14 points.: Sales esti mated 225.000 tales. The opening was steady at a de- C-t-n of 1 to 4 points in response to . ii.thr easier cables and good weather , In the Sooth but after fluctuating within a range of 6 or ( points with active months holding- pretty well up to last night s finals during the rore noon, the market had a sharp break after midday. All months with the exception of March, whach was re latively quiet, sold at new low levels . for' the movement and about 50 to 85 points below the high figures of the months. . There was quite , general selling on ' the decline evidently for both; Hng and short accounts but ; there was also some strong buying of i May and July and the market rained 2 or 3 points from the lowest just be fore the close. Reports of an easier , spot basis, particularly in the Missis sip pi valley seemed to be the chief - bear feature and while these reports were more or less Indefinite they sug gested that the low grades were sell lngr low enough to be tenderahle on i New York contracts. Some local spot 'peoples said that this must refer to certain, small lots of hedged cotton and that the Interior was by no means so weak. - Southern spot markets oflflclaHy reported were , unchanged to lrltf.cent lower. The approach of the census report which is expected ' on Friday seems to have little effect on sentiment, although bulls have an . tlclpated that the showing will be fa vorable to prices. " Receipts at the ports to-day 17,070 bales, against 17,362 last week and 19, 151, last year. For the week 100, 000 against 110,749 last week and 1(8,75 last year. To-day's receipts at -New Orleans 3,49s. against, 6,038 . last, 'year, and at Houston, 8.121 against 12,642 last year. THE STOCK MARKET. Some Further Speculative Liquida tion Atteution Paid to News of a Tenor . .Unfavorable to a Business Revival -Lot Price Not Widely " Below the Bent. .'New York.' March 17. There was some - further speculative liquidation " going on in the stock market, to-day as a natural sequence to the ' active selling to that end in progress at the end of the previous day. The volume of the market diminished consider ably and the lightening of the selling , pressure before the end of the, day opened the way to an irregular recov- - ery. The rally was not entirely con vincing to speculative sentiment and the later market fell Into dullness and hesitation. The action of Amalga mated Copper was of large influence on the general course of the market. while the price movement was down ward attention was paid to news items of a tenor unfavorable to the Idea of business revival. Reduction of wages : amongst cotton, ynljl workers was an instance mrttwtiw report ot la bor difficulties eh the Denver A Rio , Grande. ., A, . projected government prosecution . agamst the Chesapeake Ohio kept alive the Influence of yesterday's Supreme Court- decision in the. packing: house discrimination cases. While the mar ket has been easier to-day and a lurther decline established through the liquida tion. hy holders disappointed at the put set and demand spinners. It was to be no ticed, that a demand for May was found to maintain that position at a greater premium than yesterday. The feeling in the trade is one of extreme despondency though It Is admitted that trade la slow ly Improving In many directions. It Is this Improvement which sustains the stock market, but It has not yet fceea felt by the spinners who feel most pes simistic on the situation and believe they will be able to buy tn a much lower level when, holders realise that they will not buy .except .from hand to mouth. 2 ?
