New York. March 21. United States Steel -was the mainstay o the atock market to-day. Ta urge ec cumulation of that stock carried It to th highest uric of the year, al lowing for the 1-2 per cent, dividend which came oft the price this week. . The content of the pamphlet report of the .company, issued yesterday, were responsible for this demonstra- tlon especially those passage dealing -lth the. conditions in the trade since -the Crt of the year, A. notable im - cression was made by the official rurjince there given that the rae of Vxpaneion in ne average daily or ders coming for March was aa great as It had been successively In Jn- uary and February over the depth of the" Jocember depression. 'The anxi ety of the earlier part of the week caused by reports from Pittsburg- that the revival of the steel trade . was halting was allayed fey this Informa tion.". The weekly, reviews of the mer cantile agencies gave conservative en- , couragement to . the hopeful spirit prevalent In the stock market Ad vices from the cotton manufacturers . were an exception and the rate of demoralisation reported In the print cloth trade with plans " for curtail ment of production, were not liked The expectation of a message from . This decline was about what was looked for and the offering of May by broker supposed to represent the long interests caused a decline of somo 10 points before tbey were absorbed. The demand cams from buyers who felt that the market was low enough and that It was oversold. ' Their buying finally brought about a alight reaction with th new crops about last evening- price, cm the other hand the Southern broker and spinners, both North and South, ar ex ceedinrlr nesslmlstlo after a decline of With I io a bale with retailers holding small stock of good and with merchant gen eratiy buying only from band to mouth. After the el yesterday In Liverpool pinner took additional 3,030 bale. The statistical position continues to show the deorease In the yield of all the cotton countries without attracting any notice or interest in America, where th trad aT depressed and see nothing to change their view, though It 1 evident there must be a slowly growing chang for the better.
