Bales were estl mated at 206.000 balea. . Tha market -opened steady at an ad ranee of 2 to 7 points and after some little Irregularity increased tha sain on steady Liverpool cables, firmer advices .from Southern spot markets, covering Wall Street shorts and a scattering flrnand from local professionals. March sold up to.ftXS or 15 points net higher. but there were only a few scattering transactions with covering by belated short the only -support, and that month later eased off readily with other post Hons. Majr sold t points over last night's finals but new crop position were rela . tively. easy owing to good weather In the South and at the beat were only S or f points net higher. There was not much snap to the buying "en the advance and during the afternoon tbe market , turned - easier ' under realising by early buyers In the absence of bull - support. There were quite a number of private advices from various Southern points reporting a better demand for spot cotton and firmer Interior holders and the Southern spot markets officially reported were unchang ed to quarter cent net higher. The fact that receipta at the1 ports continue light Is regarded by many as pointing so light end of the month clearances, and ex ports to-day were again very small. , Receipts -at the ports to-day 1S.S23 bales against 11,07? last week and 21,901 last year. Irregularity Again the Moat Cliarac- -terlstlo Feature or the Stock Mnr ket -The Pacific Railroads Fever Ian and This Affects the Whole ' last.. , New York', March 28. Irregularity was again the most characteristic feature of the stock market to-day. The undertone was heavy at the outset with several ' manifestations of strength but In the main hesitating. Announcement of the resumption ' on April 1st 'of full time, at the Reading collieries gave stimulus-to 'Reading and other coal shares. Union Pacific fluctuated feverishly and broke from 12SV4 to 125 '.4 when It became known that the new financing plan con templates an issue of perhaps 50,000,000. Southern Pacific, which developed un usual activity and, strength in the early session loot some of Its gain, and the list as a whole registered declines. There were partial recoveries, however, but In the final hour the. market showed dimin ished force, with renewed attacks by the abort interest. The closing was steady wfttr prices' rallying. From abroad the only noteworthy feature waa tbe weekly report of the bank of England, whose reserves declined to 48.60 per eent. against 51.20 per cent, last week. Monetary con ditions were unchanged, here being lit tle demand. Gross earnings of 40 rail roads, for the second week . of March show -a decrease of 13.44 per cent, com pared with, the" corresponding week of last year. For the third week of the month 10 roads show a falling off of 12.73 per -seat, , The bond market was Irregular, with government. Insure unchanged . on. call. Sales,, par value, were 14,170,000. . . A sharp rilly, In Liverpool was due to the , rather better feeling in Europe that cotton had reached a level which Justified the gradual buying of cot- . ton. In view of the small supply and the necessary vicissitudes of the crop yet to be planted. Here we have a quiet market, with trade continuing bearish on the depressing advices : from Eastern spinners which brought about some selling for a reaction. Before the close of the day a better 'demand was reported, giving some markets for export to the continent. ... The- trade here is . bearish in its Views, owing to the absence of any active demand in general trade. Good reports from spot markets at other points lent some strength to futures and there was mors of a disposition to trade on tbe long side of the market During the late session the market eased oft several points as a result of favorable reports that the new crop is now a factor.
