Capt. W. tC Croslnnd,- of Rlrhmond County. Correspondence of The Observer. Rockingham, July 23. Capt. W. E. Crosland, one of the largest and most successful farmers In North Carolina, after a brief Illness, died at his resi dence ten miles south of Rockingham this morning at 11 o'clock, of paraly sis of the heart Captain Crosland had been complaining a day or two of pain in hla side and shoulder. Captain Crosland was born in 1848 in Marlboro county. S. C. At the age of 17 years he enlisted In the Con federate army and was a member of Capt. John Hartinjton'a regiment. After the war he removed to Anson county and was married to Miss Vir ginia LeOrand In 1874. In 1878 to gether with his brother-in-law, Capt. W. I. Everett, he purchased a targe tract of land In Wolf Pit township, in this county, and removed there. The partnership of Crosland 4V Everett has since added a number of largo tracts of land to Ita original purchase and ita farmlhs Interests are consid ered perhaps the most valuable in the State. Captain Crosland'a second wife waa Miss Evans, of Cumberland county. He Is survived by his wife and ten children. Captain Crosland had been a mem ber of the board of directors of the Btate prison for eight years and mucn of Its success has been due to his ex perience and good business judgment He was one of the county s most in fluential citizens.
