Standard Oil Case Affects Move ment rHt w ..Torlt Jrirr:2TSneculatiye . liquidation on a large scale broke prices at stocks badly to-day. The fall was gradual and restrained rh the early stages but became more pre cipitate as it progressed, uncovering stop-loes orders. Knowledge ot the existence of such orders emboldens the professional operator to tnaks short sales and to offer concessions tn prices In making these sales thus forcing declines. Speculative liquida tion and short selling have been in evidence before this week but ttiey were overcome by the force of the buying demand. . It was in this respect that the market showed a notable change to day, the buying orders, except at prjcea below the opening level, show ing a material shrinkage. The order from President Roosevelt to push a re-trial of the Standard Oil case was a .professed motive for much of the selling, especially amongst those who had bought stocks largely on the ground of the decision la favor of the Standard Oil Company. The buy ing demand prompted by that deci sion was fed by reaming sales yes terday and the day before by those who had bought stocks at a lower level.- The digestion of profits In that way is supposed to have been very large and to represent, more over, the passing of stocks from the sands of the powerful groups which have fostered the advance Into those Of scattered holders.- much less wealthy and much less okilful . and practiced In the cpnduct 6f specula tive operations and the manipulations of prices. The nature of- the reports put in circulation to sustain the up - ward movement has pointed to the , excess Into which It was running. Yesterdays report, for Instance, that - tha-Unlled 8tatwr8t.ef--aubaidiary-o.-floiala were meeting here to concert measures for starting up the full ca- Cecity of the companies was met y the formal statement by . President Corey that the present activity of the plants represents , 9S per. cent of its capacity. The days news offered little change in general conditions. 'The week's j Currency movement Indicated another huge acceuion to the cash holdings! or the local banks, the sub-Treasury operations and the movement on baf- ance from the Interior Indicating an increase of about $10,006,000 for the week. The stock market was quiet in tne latter part or tne dy hut showed no effective recovery. tre day's losses running quite -generally from 1 to I points.
