The ' case, of State vs. Joseph Lance, charged with tha killing of little Alma Green at Buena Vista railway station a day or .wo before Christmas last year, was called for trial before Judge Ward in .Superior Court this morning. The prosecution la simply asking for i .erdlct of murder in the second de ;ree and the selection of a jury was -aslly and promptly had. The morning session was consumed with the Introduction of evidence by .he State showing the death ot the hlld. the wound inflicted and minor incidents connected with the tragedy. The defense has noryet been outlin d. counsel for the accused simply 'standing pat" and requiring the prosecution to prove minutely every olt of testimony. The killing of the little girl occurred late one afternoon In la.n December. The child had sone to a bank near the railroad track and not far from her home to watch (he train pass. While standing on the embankment watching the train a. random snot was nrea rrom tne doorway of one of the cars. The bul let in Its flight took effect in the child's abdomen, ' indicting a mortal wound. Young Lance was subsequently ar rested charged with firing the ahot. Hpedal to The Obierver. Durham, Aug. 7. Ike M. Cooley, a white man 3 years of age, was killed by a Southern eastbound pas senger train to-day. He was killed inside the yard limits, a few hundred yards from the union station.
