Nw hlh rec ord for the bull movement,, were made 1 cotton again during; (to-day trading, -although -the bull leader were at no time laargresaive buyers. The market closed ateady at a net ad vance of -15 points on August, and of 8 to II points on later positions. Busi ness was a little more Active than yes terday sale being estimated at 150.- 00 bales. The market opened steady - at an advance of 2 a 7 points In re sponse to better cables than expected. Private advices said that New York , (bulla had bought in Liverpool, bat there was no sign of support from this ; source at the opening here and during th6 first few minutes the market eas ed" off 3 or 4 point from the best un ', der bearish pressure and realising. Of ferings were not heavy, however, and before the end of the first hour a buying movement set In, seemingly for both accounts, stop loss orders were caught and before the advance was checked October sold at 9.8 S. reaction to 8.75 under realising and selling for a turn ty local scalpers - war not accompanied by any weaken lng of the undertone, and later the market ruled very firm and nervous wing to covering with October selling up to 86, or 17 point i net higher, while August touched 19.19. or 23 points oet higher on a few purchases oy a local spot interest. The close was off from the best under realizing, southern spot markets officially re ported were generally unchanged Weather conditions continued favor able In the main while somewhat con fllcting crop news was of a bearish average. Receipts at the ports to-day 8.S83 pales, against 4,233 last week, and 1, 142 last year. For the week estlmat ed 25.000 against 26.35E last -week and 7,140 last year. To-day's receipts at New Orleans 371 against 439 a year o. At Houston 1,491 against 3,224 last year. THE STOCK. MARKET. New York, Aug. 7. It was a day of speculative excitement In the stock market and of violent and erratic price fluctuations The bull move ment started on Its way prosperously and reached a new high stage of prices or me year witn great animation and buoyancy In the dealings. At the ac celerated pace of the' advance the movement overran itself to some ex tent and paid ths penalty in a sharp setback. The market was the largest in volume of ths present year. Ex tensive coverings by shorts has been a recognised factor In the later stages ot tne rise. The distress of the snort interest In American Smelting and in National Lead -became so acute In the course of the day and the disposition to punish them seemed so ruthless that the speculative temper became discomposed, and heavy unloading of speculative accounts was precipitated The bears saw a chance to regain an aavantage and raided prices down wards In a quest for atop loss orders. forecasts of the week's currency movement pointed to another heavy accretion to the cash holdings of the - banks. . The movement of currency from the Interior, although on a dl minlshefl scale is still sufficient to add between one and two million dollars to the gain of the banks. The day's trlce changes are small when the width of the day's extreme fluctua tions is considered. Bonds were Arm. Total sales par Value 15,394.000. U. 8. bonds were unchanged on call. Liverpool cables that the strength of that , market Is due to New York buying orders, which are attributed to the same interest identified with the buy ing movement here. October and August have led the market to-day in the same way as of late leading the traders to believe that the mar ket will be sustained well above the Southern markets unless crop' ac counts should rapidly change from their present good tenor, to become poer. Within the next fortnight we should hear of shedding from vari ous districts as the plant Is so heav ily" fruited that it must lose some part of the present prospect. The feeling Is bearish on the crop re ports, but with the near position! strongly hold no immediate decline ka expected, though npinncrs show less disposition to buy forward de liveries even at theso prices. The spot market remains unchanged. - HUBBARD BROS. & CO. ' 4. .- ; Dry Goods Market. New York. After the call the market sold off by reason ot lack of outside support. Manipulation In the New York market caused a spurt there, which waa reflected somewhat at New Orleans, but did not exert Its full force on amount of the local market be ing more under the influence of good crop prospects. The market ruled a few points easier during the late session on selling by long scalpers, but there was po signi ficant change in its conctltutlon.
