Aug. 18.--rha .cotton ket wm muc less active to-day with the undertone tKrrou and small trader "Inclined ; to go," eautJoutr--pnding some better Information as to wis, extent sod character of the remaining lone Interest or some decided change to tha spot or . crop situation. r Tha dose was steady 'at . an advance of t polnts on Aumst, but -generally " unchanged to 6 points lower with the late j positions relatively - firm. "Bales were, astlsiated at" about 171,000 .-fcjes.;'; ;,.';. .' . , The " market, opened steady at unchang ed prices- to a decline of $ points under scattered selling promoted by .a bearish view of , yesterday's Sharp break, : and continued - good weather in - the South. The Liverpool market, however, was a .little better than expected, there was no renewal ot ' yesterday sensational llqul dat ton. and shortly after, the opening the market did .better on covering and -mod' rate buying by reactionists. After ad' ranclng to t.so for October and 8.00 lor January, or 10 to 13 points net higher, offerings Increased and the. market soon : turned easier under a renewal of bear pressure and Southern selling, the latter being supposed to reflect the ' favorable progress of the crop, and the approach of the' early marketing season. - October eased off to .03 under this selling, but in the late trading was slightly steadier as a result of covering and closed at .01 There seemed to be some selling of October against purchases of December, probably for old straggle accounts which Is supposed to explain the relative steadi ness of the later positions. The second day ot the dry goods auction la said to have been leas satisfactory than yester day, with the prices realised lower, and tha buying -less animated. ' Southern spot markets officially reported were un changed to 4c lower. 'Receipts at the port to-day J. 196 bales against 8,41 last week and 7S last yesr. There Is atlU - njuch doubt r' concerning" the .bull pool's fine, but the Impression prevails that while they have liquidated a good deal of It they still have quite an Inter est on that side. Whether this Is. true or Dot, they are too much weakened' to be reckoned sv formidable factor at the moment.' In the meantime the weather continues almost , perfect and there : are no signs of Improvement- In null circles. -v- - - CARPENTER. . BAUUUT ' W. e. STOCK MARKET. . Jfew Tork. Aug. IS. Tha manner in which the market acted to-day proved very pusaling to the conjectures that at tempted, to explain It A lull In the ac tivities of the powerful party In the spec ulation which has favored the advance by all tha devlees of leadership and manipulation was evident. A party of .professional operators acted on this evi dence to move on the short side of the msrket and helped on the reaction that resulted from the withdrawal of the fostering measures of the hull party. This besr movement was conducted with extreme, caution and with signs of timid lty covering operation being resumed a small rsoessfons in prices. The amount . ot liquidation induced by , the recession In prices proved moderate and there was nothing- like the precipitancy in unload tng with which so prolonged in advance aa has occurred usually culminates. Late in the day tho particular weak ness of the Rock Island group gays suggestion of more Influential leadership for a bear turn in, the market and the attack on prices became somewhat more aggressive with a weak closing at the lowest. The-action ot the market was attributed to purely technical causes and found no explanation la any positive de velopment in the day's news. There was nothing alarming In the day's news from the crop regions, al though differences of opinion are ex pressed amongst expert authorities as to the extent of the harm done to corn and spring wheat The sub-Treasury con tinues to make large contributions to the supply 6f Banking cash and the level of the. Aug. 1J. -Although the Liv erpool market reacted from the low price oi yesieraay tnis market could not sus tain the rally which this reaction caused The reason Is found in the slow selling br ine eoutn or toe distant deliveries based on the good crop prospects and the ah' sence of demand from spinners. With the exception of a portion of the sandy lands or Texas, no section seems to need rain ht fact the crop accounts ire accented as .jointing at th present time to the largest yield on record. Of coarse the danger from hot dry weather Is not yet passed but It Is passing with each day. In October the trading fell to small pro portions as the Wall Street operators re mained quiet after the sharp fluctuation of yesterday. On the whole the trade were looking for a rally baaed on the iaea pe south would not aell new re. eelpts freely. ' Haywood, dark Co'a Cotton Letter, New Orleans. La..
