'"V CHARLOTTE DAILY. OBSER VEH, AUGUST 18, 1908. : mm mmmm aim iimi ii ni linwiiiwuiiwm Financial and ' Commercial v the oonox MtuixBt. Nw Tnr A. 17. After a, very -r Irregular early and middle session to. day the cotton arket became very inrm en a renewal . or strong wan Street bull support and covering, with f the close firm at a net advance of 6 T to IS points - Sale were estfmatei at 4 The market opened firm, the feature on he call being the sensational flue- tuatlona in August, the flraf sata of a' -which vu at 10.25, the second at 10.20 ana tne tnira at iv.. or pomu nei higher. The rest of the llet opened 6 to S poinu Signer in sympatny wttn tbAwgvtdiraa better -eabls than expected,' and continued talk of drought In carta of Texas. Only 400 -. bales, of August were bought on the ' advanoe, and right , after the call ' " that position broke to 9-98. on ealea of ' ' . about tOO bales. : ' This affected the late months and ' with local bears inclined to take the J aggressive as aoon as the August V ' ' bulge was over, the market weakened ' sharply with October celling off from ' . .t.ti to 9.14 during the early afternoon, ' ' - f or.about 10 point net lower. At this level there wa a renewal of . active 5 Wall -Street bull support and the f market 'became very firm In the Ute . trading, with October advancing to 3 V-'f. 0.48, anew high level for the day and V 4 2. point above the low level of last ,V ' .V week. The close was within a point , i or two of the best on active months, '-' with August cloning at 10.10 bid. Prl- - vare advices or dry weamer ana crp conditions as a rule are considered very favorable. There la talk of. cot ton cominr here from Galveston for deJIvery on August contracts. 1 Receipts at the ports to-day 4.817 bales, against .3,963 last week, and 1.- SS'l last year. For the week estimat ed 40.000 bales, against 24,037 last week, and 10.98 last year. To-day's receipts at New Orleans 810 bales, against 81 ( vast year, and at Houston 4,031 against 1,148 last year. STOCK MARKET. New Tork, Aug. 17. Irregularity waa the most conspicuous featuru of to-day's stock market. Prices rose and fell alternately mostly within nar row ranee, although some of the more active features registered substantial gains at the opening. The trading bore evidence of bear pressure and general professionalism. Quite the most Important development of tne day In railway circles was the publi cation of the annual reports of the Harriman line for the fiscal year. The Union pacific system showed a net loss compared with the previous . year of about $2,170,000, while the Southern Pacltlo Railway reported a net decrease for the same period of (8.383)000. In both Instances, how ever, the falling: off' was largely due lo Increased taxes. Both lines snow ma terial gains in pet earnings for the month of June. Tho declaration of a to dividend, presumably for the quar ter, though not so stated, by the Standard Oil Company, of New Jersey, In place of a previous disbursement of $9, was tht only noteworthy feature ' of the outside market. The vagaries of a well-knriwn market manipulator " from New Knglshd caused some un easiness in conservative quarters. Much the greater part of the day's business was done in early session, trading becoming very trlrtn1 in the afternoon while . the list developed a heavy undertone, In the last half, however, under the lead of St. Paul, Smelting and Read ing, the market grew strong and the Plainer wit active at the day's best prices. The local money market ruled tMi4 ana 1U 11 with no change In tho rates for time accommodations and a verv slight demand for call loans at nnvemment bonds were unchanged o pil The general bond market was easy. Showers are reported from various sections of ' Texas Beeville an inch, Waco half an Inch and light showers around San r" Antonio. On these advices the market slowly, declined from the opening until heavy buying of October by "Wall ? Streets interests advanced that posi- 'tiori some eighteen points, closing the 'market Arm. This support has been expected for' several days, as the re lapse Into .dullness after the recent decline .foreshadowed a reaction. The " dally arrival of new cotton now ! coming pn the market will weigh upon an -unwilling buyer the spinner.
