CHARLOTTE DAILY OBSERVER, SEPTEMBER 17,19084 T Financial land Commercial V sa COTTOX ' MARKET. to New Tork. Sept 16. The cotton market old at the highest price reached since the low lerel of September M, during to day midday cession but later eased eft . with the leee steady at a net advance ' et I to ( point. Sale (or the day were estimated at X60.0M bales. The market opened steadr at a decline of 4 to points in response to dlsappoint- ; ins; sables, less favorable. Manchester ad rices, reports that theWest Indian, storm was .passing out to sea, and a favorable weather map. But -bearish traders" were by no means aggressive, and the market spoa- steadied on covering, be coming very firm .during) the middle of the day, wit October selling up to 101, and January to 1.72, or U to U points net higher, and about tS points above the recant low level on October contract. This advance was due to Wall Street support as well as a - demand from snorts,' and was probably noouragod by report of steadier interior markets, and ot -a better demand lor spot cotton from New England spinners. Some of the buying is believed to be based on expectations of a bullsh October condl tlon report on the 2d of that month and - the approach f the frost period, which i usually preceded by considerable ner ' -vousness on the part of short. The re action late in the day waa due .to re- ' allslng and local pressure. ' ' Receipt at the pert to-day 11,143 bales, against 21,419 last week . and - 31,23 last year. For the week 160,000 against 178, t3 last week and 150.862 last year. : To-day's receipts at .TNew Orleans 4,028 against 1.764 last year, and at Houston 11,538 against 4,99 last year. STOCK MARKLT. New York. Sept. 14.-A11 that B. M. Harrlman had to Impart concerning the properties' in which he is Interested fell far short of what the speculative lmagl atlon had been led to expect during the weeks of buying of the stocks at steadily advancing prices. It wss disappointment on this score that caused the crumbling Of prices to-day more then any other factor. Mr. Harrlman's terse reason for the great strength in the stocks of Me ' railroads was that it wu "because they were too weak before." Th weakness to day might be explstned with equal jus tice as due to stocks having become too strong. Reading served as the Instrument for support of the market as was the case yesterday. That stock was about the only on to Show positive strength at any time. The course of the market was npt an entire surprise to observer less closely concern ed In the speculation. The extent of the rise In Itself has suggested th approach of a reactions The moderate pace of the business Improvement had Indicated the over-discounting of this in th securities market. The effort at liquidation finds little absorptive demand to meet it ss the general public Interest In the speculation has beea at no time great. The active selling pressure continued up to the close, which wss weak st the lowest puces. .Bonds were heavy. Total sales, par . value, t3.236.000. U. 8. 4s coupon declined per cent in the bid price.
