Tryon, P hone. 204- Freeldent of the Iittle-IxMig Company Withdraws and Establishes OenUe nrnn'i Fnrnisblns;, Clothin g and Shoe Store In Place of Business Which Bee Been Used by the Old ' Concern Tot This Trade Change Effective February 1st A Number of Young; Bnslness Hen Associate Themselves With Mr. Lena; In His Latest Undertaking Wliat He Has Done since He Came Here 27 Years Ago. The withdrawal of Mr. H. Cy Long from the well-known department stores of the Little-Long Company and the Incorporation of , the H. C. Long Company Is the moat conse quental business change of the sea son. While it has been known tor severai weeks that such a course was In anticipation, the details of the trade did not shape until last night when the announcement was officially made. The stockholder in the new concern are as follows: Messrs. H. C. Long, C. B. Bryant. C. C. Hook. J. O. Oard- ner, E. B. Llttlefteld, A. C. Lents, Perry McGinn, W. C. Btiklthr, Murray Long, of Chsrlott, and Mrs. Margaret Trumbo, of New Tors, city. and J. L. Frank, of Baltimore, Md. The officers sre Mr. H. C. Long, pres ident; Mr. A. C. Lents, vtce president. snd Mr. c. B. Bryant, secretary and treasurer. The paid-in capital Is 130,000. WILL, CUT OFF STORE. The stsre which has been used by the Little-Long Company for shoes, men's furnishing, etc., will be sepa rated from the other part of the stor snd become the permanent place of business for the new eompany. The sameaort of goods ' will be nanaieo end the business pushed with increas ing vigor. Mr. Lon win nave entire supervision of the store and will have the able assistance of Messr. A. C. Lent, the vice presi- dsnt; - Perry McGinn, W. C. Stlke lsather and Murray Long:, who have been Identified with this part of the reneral atore for a number of years. They are experienced young; men and clever salesmen. The company will do strictly a cash business. Mr. Lents is a particularly successful bus iness man and within recent year ha done much to bring- this depart ment of the store Into prominence. MR. LONG AS CHIEF. The fact that the store will .have as ts head Mr. Long, distinctly fors- shsdows the success of the new cor poration. For J 7 years Mr. Long ha bean a resident of the city and for the greater part of that time h has been counted one or cnariotte s foremost men of affairs. When he first came to Charlotte in 18S. he beean his business career as a clerk In the stor of Hargrave ft Welhelm After remaining for some time with thl firm, he accepted a position with Rogers & Co. His next step was the promotion of a company that pur- hased and took over the management of the old Davis Rscket store. After laying with this company for six years, he organised the lapp-Long Company, and wa vice president and uyer for this concern. For 15 year Mr. Long has been In this one stand nd his name has by this long con nection been coupled In the public mind with this place of business. PRESIDENT OF LITTLE-LONG COMPANY, With the formation some years ago of the Utlle-Lottg Company, Mr. Long was made vice president and later president and to hi efforts and fine sagacity 1 largely due the promi nence Into which this store has come, not -only In the estimation of, Char lotte people, but of many others la this general section. It has prob ably come nearer meeting the needs of this growing city than any other, and certainly Is regarded as one of the greatest and most widely patronlzad of Charlotte's mercantile establish ments. The H. C. Long Company becomes an independent concern February 1st and with the record of Its promoter and president as a basis upon which to build itself In the business sphere of this city, it I freely estimated that this will In time become a leading establishment of Charlotte and add mightily to the name of the city as the meeca of trade In the Carolina. MR. TOWNSEND TAKES STOCK The retirement of Mr. Long from the old concern necessitated some Im portant changes In the personnel of the management of the Little-Long -Company. Mr. I J. Townsend, man- I ager of Kress' store, becomes a pur chaser of stock In the company and together with Mr. A. B. Springer and Mr. J. W. Cuthbertson, will have ac tive management of the affairs of the Little-Long firm. The wide ex perience and progresslveness of these three gentlemen guarantee a continu ation of the brilliant success which has come to the company In the past. The directorate Is now composed of the following-named well-known busi ness men: Messrs. W. K. Holt, J. H. Little, D. H. Jenkins, C. 8. Lyon, S. B. Tanner, P. S. Gilchrist, J. W. Cuth bertson, and Drs. R. L. Gibbon and John R. Irwin. t People United in Favor of Chaingangs There win never a proposition put forth in the county which brought forth opinions more generally of one accord than that of the proposed abo lition of the chaingang system. Farm ers, merchants, lawyers In fact all who have been heard to say anything at all on the subject are unanimous In opposition to It The newspaper discussion has aroused quite consid. erable Interest and It Is safe to Say that It Is not now a debatable question In Mecklenburg. In the awakened view of her people it has but one aid.
