The census bureau to-day reported 12,470,22 running bales of cotton (Tinned from the growth of 1808, to January 1st last, against 9,951,506 a yar ago, and 27.S8S ginneries operated against 27, S78 a year ego. The percentage of the whole crop ginned to January let Is 99 per cent for 109. and 0. for 1908. i The report includes 281,821 round bales, and 88.01 Sea Island bales for 1909. It count round bales aa half bales and excludes timers. The cotton ginned to January 1st, 1907, and 1906, was -ll.7tl.03 .t and 8,726.42 bales, respectively. 'The following resolutions were offered by Mr. Kellum and unanimously adopted, vit: First, Resolved, That the fifth judicial district, by its representatives assembled, does hereby pledge Itself to support a petition before the Leg islature to increase the judicial dis tricts of the State from sixteen to twenty and hereby Invites the co-operation of the other districts of the State to petition the Legislature to secure enactment,' Second. Resolved, That loool bar associations of the several counties of the State are hereby invited and re quested to send a committee to the Legislature to urge the passage of such measures as will secure the pur poses above expressed. In Superior Court to-day Nat Laws, a negro charged with a capital crime against Vella Williams, colored, submitted to crim inal intent and Judge Long gave him twelve years In the penitentiary. A special venire had been summoned for the trial of the case and was ready. The attorney's coup at the last minute waa a surprise. Thirty-five men were tiers for special duty and were not neded. Judge Long gave him three years less than he might have given him, and Attorney Loven steln was satisfied with the sentence, which was much milder than a trial and certain conviction and hanging. The court has been concerned chiefly with small cases. Judge Long has not taken any foolishness in the. trial of the matters up and has about cleaned out the Jail. Judge Long will return Monday, January 18th, for the civil docket. The most interesting case on that calendar Is the Indictment, In several forms, by Mrs. Octa D. Thomas against the merchants' of Durham who attached her boarding house furnishings and goods once while she was outside the State upon a mission of comfort to a relative. John Burrage, aged 20. The e-.;re load, including the wadding, .edged In the young man's left kidney, making a wound the size of a silver dollar nnd three inches deep. The wound Is a serious one but Is not considered fatal, unless complications set in. Tho boys were on the land of their fath er, Mr. J. M. Burrage, near the Three Mile branch and only a short distance from their home. They had stopped In a sage field and lain down.
