STOCK MARKET. New York, Feb. l. The stagnation that has prevailed in the slock ma ket was changed to-day Into an acllv s selling movement without any counteriahuiclug demand to meet It. A severe Inroad on prices was the consequence. The whole market hinged on the developments of the steel trade. While no formal an nouncement was made during the session of the stock exchange, it was generally known that conferences were going on amongst officials of the United Slates Steel Corporation which were likely to Is sue hi changes in the schedule of prices which has been determinedly held by il corporation. The notable effect on senti ment produced by this devaiopment owed iu depth to its abrupt reversal from the supposed determination of the corpora tion to hold to Its former policy. Reports that the Independent steel companies were making concessions and were getting what business was going were met by deprecatory comments on the small proportions of business to the capacity of the trade at large and Its lack of slgnSflcance as a reflection of trade conditions. A different view of the sit uation seems to have been adopted some time yesterday. The stock market promptly took up the burden of this re versal of policy and btgan to discount an expected out in steel prloes. . F'sars that the state of E. H- Karri man's health was not such aa to enable bin) to oarry out the projects which have been a mam Incentive to speculative confidence on the part of a large element in the market exerted a heavy effect This feeling seemed to have taken hold of foreign markets as well as this, and London sent important selling, orders in the Harrtman stocks to 13.000. Opinion Is gaining ground that some of the cotton bought In January will be de livered on March and that this la the reason for the loss of the premium on the nearby positions. At the close the market was supported at the Binall de cline by local buying, but the unfavor able tone of the yarn market and the de cline In stocks checked the usual outside buying.
