April 20. About 11:10 o'clock Sunday night fire was discovered in thrse wooden ware houses near the Atlantic Coast Line depot. The buildings were entirely consumed with a large quantity of guano, peanuts and groceries. Be side the buildings and contents three box cars were consumed with about one hundred bales of cotton in th. Can and on ths platform. The wind was from southeast and 1 Carried the fire toward some vacant lota, but had it been blowing from the opposite direction doubtless one Whole square of buildings would have been destroyed. It is estimated that the loss was perhaps more than 115.000, with 13. 000 Insurance, besides what the rall ' road company carried. The losses were about as follows: Building, beloneing to A. McDowell, "Tt: H. White rd N B. Josey. 11,600 or $2,000. covered by Insurance; Scot land Neck Grocery Company. 12.000 worth of groceries, with 11.000 Insur ance; Edwards & Company. 40 tons of guano, with no Insurance; White efc Paull, 85 fons of guano, with no insurance; N. B. Jnney Company, 78 bags of peanuts, with no Insurance; K. C. Josey & Co. 1 ton of guano, with no insurance. Borne of the guano was saved but the cotton was a complete loss, except perhaps a little of a few bales on the platform. The origin of the fire Is unknown. 6onie think that perhaps It was acci dental, catching from a cigar or cigarette stump, while others believe it was the work of an incendiary. There was some whiskey In the warehouse, and it has been reported to-day that when the doors were opened last night some of the whis key was tsken out helter skelter, and one or two colored men had to have a physician afterwards and could hardly talk as a result of excessive drinking. Contract For ;eorge Davis Monument is Effected. Special to The Observer Wilmington. April 20 Cape Fear Chspter, United Daughters of the Con federacy, held a most enthusiastic meeting yesterday afternoon at the Wilmington Light Infantry armory, at which report was received from the George Davis monument committee relative to the handsome bronte stat us which will be erected at the en trance to the city hall building here In honor of the memory of the late Attorney General of the Confederacy. All the money for the memorial is in hand and the contract already signed with Packer, the eminent sculptor of New York, who designed the Worth Bagley monument. The Daughters plan to lav the corner-stone of the monument upon the occsslon of the State convention of the United Daugh ters here October 1 S. of this year elaborate arrangements for which are fcelng made. Charlie Sum mers, a notorious character of Sharpesburg township who has been wanted for some' time to answer B barges of blockading and retailing la a number of cases, was arrested bout sun-up Sunday morning by Sheriff Deaton and Deputy Brown, at his home, and was brought to States villa snd lodged in Jail without trou ble. Davis has been on the warpath ths past week and a num ber of moonshiners' plants have suf fered at his hands. Mr. Davis and Deputy Sheriff Ward were out in Eatfle Mills township, this county, Saturday and found and destroyed an unusual ly laree Illicit distilling plant. The outfit showed evidence that it had been In use for some time ana me iau- gallon etlll and all fixtures were in their places ready for business when the officers arrived and whacked them to pieces. Deputy Davis and Sheriff Adams, of Alexander county, made a trip over into Wilkes county the latter part of last week and destroyed two blocked plants. One of these was a large one located on a pretty Drancn in ley between two high mountains of the Brushy range, and had been in busi ness but a short time, all the fixtures being practically new.
