I THE NEWS-rcKAL r. G. COBB, rublisliST THURSDAY, FEB. 20, 1908. BANK ROBBERY FALLS. AT GRANITE One-fourth of what tve eat, savs one writer, keeps us. That looks like pointing the way to economy, but most of us will con- tmue eating tne other tnree fourths because they keep the folks who need the money. Boldest Robbery in AnnaU of State Robbers Lock Casbier in Vault and Escape. . Associated Tress Dispatch. 16ih. While one masked robber help np the cashier in true wild west j'.tyle, his two companions looted t'le vault of the bank at Granite Falls, N. C, early last night, secured all the cash in the insti tution. 2,700, forced the cashier to enter the vault and after lock ing him in made their escape. The robbery the boldest in the annals of the state was not discovered until 9 o'clock this morning." When Cashier W. G. Whisnant did not appear for breakfast, his family thoroughly alarmed, instituted search. On entering the bank a feeble tap ping was heard in the vault and when it was opened the missing cashier stasrsrered out, more dead than alive from his fifteen hours of close confinement. cashier's story. According to the cashier's story three strange men, wearing half masks, entered the bank at 6 o'clock Saturday evening and while one of them held him up at the point of a pistol, the other two, oblivious of the fact that pedestrains were passing the door, proceeded to help them selves to the bank's cash. " The work was done quietly and rapid 1, the robbers betraying the coolness of professionals. When satisnea that they had appropri ted the available cash the lone robber forced Whisnant to enter the vault and then locked him in Whisnant declares he made all the noise possible in his cramped quarters but his disappearance was not noted until this morning when his family discovered his absence. LOSS EMBARASSING. The bank's capital is only $10, 000 and the loss is embarassing, though neighboring banks have offered it aid to tide over its mis fortune. Granite Falls is a mill village of several hundred inhabitants, located in an inaccessible portion of Caldwell county. The author! ties throughout this section of the state have been notified, but the robbers left no clue and hav ing fifteen hours start, their cap ture seems a remote possibility. The robbery was evidently care fully planned, the bank's custom of keeping open Saturday even ings for the accommodation of mill operatives being taken ad vantage of. Stop that tickling Coug-h!
