The schools at Eessemer City have been closed on account of an epidemic of measles. The disease in claiming its victims weekly. Representative Godwin got the promise of an additional $416,000 to complete the locks and dams in the upper Cape Fear River from the chairman of the House Rivers and Harbors Committee today. Baber, whose term does not expire untl March 3, 1915. Messrs. L. E. Ligon, S. A. Wash burn, S. A. McMurry and Will J. Roberts are already in the field, and others may possibly come in due time. It is very probable that Mr. Webb will leave the matter entirely up to the people for a choice and they will voice their sentiments at a primary. Shelby correspondence Charlotte Observer. Mr. C. M. Shernll. City Man ager, tendered his resignation to the mayor and board f aldermen Tuesday night to take affect Feb ruary 1. Mr. Sherrill has faithfully discharged his duty and so far as can be ascertained at this time has proven to the people that the com mission form of goverment is a success and has saved the city mnnpv in manv different ways. ! The many friends of Mr. Shernll 3 regret to see him leave Hickory. Mr Sherrill will go to Louisville, Ky., with a much higher salary than he was getting here. ANNUAL STATEMENT OF THE BOARD 0E COMMISSIONERS OE BURKE COUNTY FOR THE FISCAt YEAR ENDING NOV. 30, 1913 ine twara or Commissioners of the County of Burke submit tne lollowing statement of the financial affairs of the county for the year ending November 30th, 1913: CAiitmi a snows the receipts and disbursements, regular iuna. The net resources and property of the county December 1st, 1912, is estimated at $91,525 82 and on December 1st, 1913, it is estimated at $93,012.83. On December 1st, 1912, when the present Board came into of fice, the indebtedness of the county was $30,743 10, of which $743. 10 is unpaid warrants and $30,000.00 five per cent, serial bonds is sued June 1st, 1912, maturing $1,500 annually from one to twenty years from date, with semi-annual payments of interest. The indebtedness of the county is now $23,500 for jail and fund ing bonds oustanding. and unpaid warrants $3,744.21, making total indebtedness of $32,244.21. The resources and property of the county December 1st, 1912, were estimated at $122,268.92, and it is now estimated at $127, 2:7.04. During the year the Board has paid on the bonds oustanding $1,500 on the principal, and $1,462.50 interest, and the unpaid war rants of the former Board amounting to $765.14; built cement walks around the Court House at cost of $43311; paid to Confederate monument, in pursuance of act of Legislature, $500;" Silver Creek bridge $406; Upper Creek bridge at Joy, Warrior's Ford, $2,668.18; Huffman and Smoky Creek bridges $176.35; public road in Silver Creek $441.95; work on the Dock Patton hill $144 90; King and Hawkins hill $278.45; the Central Highway $534.17; work in Upper Creek No. 2, Linville Falls road, $75; Linville township roads $225. 09; Upper Creek road at Joy $113.90; Bumgarner hill in Upper Fork township 259.50; work on Miller's bridge in Icard township $43 36; William3 bridge in 2Lower Fork township $77.20; roads and bridges in Lovelady $90.66; paid for right of way during year $100. Total expended for roads and bridges and r -pairs, including pay of supervisors, $6,732 45. Jail fund turned over to this Board was 13,084 12 and interest received on said fund of $314 03, making total jail fund of $13,398. 15 and total expenditures necessary for completion of jail was $14. 450.82, this Board having to expend $1,052.67 out of the genera fund in order to complete said jail. This Board has expended as law requires $1,080 to the Sheriff for stills while former Board had to pay only $580. This Board has also had an additional expense for the Septen -ber term of Court which cost, closely estimated, $530; and have h: d the heavy expense incident to the trial of four murder cases, amounting to about $1,500 with the expense of paying for the organ ization of the Recorder's Court of $50.00.
