OUR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Does anybody believe that if we had not had a Chamber of Commerce we would now be dealing with con tractors for the builiKng of a new ho tel to cost over $100,000 or that, a company for providing additional housing accommodations for the town would have ever been formed? The organization is yet in its infancy, so to speak, but already it has become a real factor in our community life. It is what we have needed for a long time and until it was organized there was no man or group of men to look out for our common interests or to start cooperative movements for the town's advancement. Our Chamber of Commerce is steadily increasing in strength and usefulness; already it is becoming a power to be depended upon to get things accomplished. Ev ery progressive-minded citizen of the town should be a member. A COMMUNITY BUILDING. Morganton needs and in time should have a community building that will serve several purposes. Such a building as we have in mind would provide an auditorium for public gatherings, modern offices for the town manager, clerk, mayor, depart ment chiefs, etc. in other words an up-to-date municipal building. The school auditorium has been used for all kinds of gatherings, en tertainments, etc., since its erection, but there are often times when such interfere with school work or when the seating capacity is too limited. Let us keep in mind and begin bend ing our efforts toward the providing of a modern community building. useful life. Overland Four has new riding qualities. Standard Motor Co. The conference says: "Waiting for a reduction in con struction prices is wasting valuable time. Prices of building materials are not likely to decline untif there is a reduction in wage scales. Since the price of labor is made up of labor cost, plus the cost of raw materials, ard since the production and transportation of raw materials is essentially a labor problem, there can be no drop in selling prices with out the corresponding drop in pro duction and transportation costs." 3 y THE OXFORD mm The Health of Your Horse is an important mattertoo important, altogether, to neg lect, v We sell Stock Foods' Condi tion Powders, Vetinery Rem dies, anything and everything else that will help to keep the horse healthy and restore him to good health when he is sick. Probably John Ruskin did not have road building in mind when he wrote the following, but it could be well ap plied to the building of a road as to anything else: ' "When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for the present delight, not for present use alone. Let it be such work as our descendants will thank us for, and let us think, as we lay stone on sand, that a time is to come when those stones will be held sacred because our hands. have touched them, and that men will say as they look upcm the labor and wrought substance of them. 'See! This nur fathers did for us.' " JON'T wonder whether you should get acquain ted with vulcanising or not. Let us demon strate the fact to you that we can heal a blowout and so strengthen the casing that it will serve you for a long while afterward. s i w w -mtmt mi mf.mmi mim(mnmr)mtmt-m mmrmmmimimcmi s 'oarwna asOssOsOb'' aAaoAnAA.iAnAnAAA-iAnsvsi Wlien a family moves to another town it is a mighty good indication that they vill become good citizens if soon after their arrival they be come identified with the church of their denomination, take member ships in any civic organization that may exist and subscribe to the town raper." Such steps indicate a real transfer of civic allegiance and give evidence of an emest desire to be come a part of the community life. Beaufort News. . v The Morganton News-Herald says the people of Burke are enthusiastic in their support of the Central High way. A meeting was held in Mor ganton not long since and went on record as heartily, favoring a hard surface road through the county. There should be continued agitation of the subject all- along the line of the proposed road 'and if this is done it will not be 'a great while before a magnificent highway will stretch from the Tennessee line to the At Ss n OA C I ci g s? c c s c ?: CLOVER SEED.
