THE NEWS-HERALD, MORGANTON, N. C. AUGUST 11TH 1921. - - - r ' ' " " ' - THIRTY-THREE Jj j YEARS AGO g (Issue of August 10, 1888.)'. Rev. T. P. I Married in Morganton township, lunist 1, Mr. Joseph Propst and iliss Gertrude Carswell, granddaugh irnf Mr. M. D. Brittain. Rev. P. A. K'hitener officiated. I parried in Smokey Creek township v inday, August 5, by, and at the res idence of Esq. J.'S. Tilley, Dr. R. D. innings and Miss Maggie C. Aber- athy, both of Rutherford College. . Hon. A. M. Waddell, Democratic ;mdidate for elector for the State at ai'e will address the people at the 'o art' house in Morganton August 24. et everybody come, out and hear this distinguished orator. I Tn 1SG2 and 1863 Judge Clarke was idjutant of the 35th Regiment, com manded by Col. (now Senator) Ran- lorn. In that regiment was the gal- ant company irom isurKe ana ia- nvba, commanded nrst Dy uapt. r.1 s and then by Capt. J. T. Johnson, i Kho subsequently Decame coionei oi lip regiment. Judge Clarke was then i bov of fifteen, but he -will doubtless c rememDerea Dy many ci nis oia omrades. Mr. J. F. Murrill, editor of the lickorv Press and Carolinian and a brohibitionist of the strictest sect, knoke in the court house last Tuesday f m i " mi. l to a large auaience. ine Duraen oi his speech was to convince prohibi- ionists that their greatest mend was kbout the great temperance reform;. hat every Democrat who voted for his Third party was aiding to put us ack under the negro rule, and not advancing the temperance cause but retarding its progress. We wish ev- ry prohibition democrat in the coun- y could nave neara nis speecn. With Judge Clark on the bench, :Ion W. H. Bower at the bar as so icitor and the model Clerk, Mr. S. T. ?earson at the desk, it is reasonable o suppose that the business of the tourt would be transacted correctly nd with dispatch. Messrs. S. B. Briggs of Yancey county and H. S. Blair of Caldwell tounty, both candidates for the Sen- Ite on tne democratic ticKet in mis district, spoke at the court house in Morganton last Tuesday and made a fine impression on our people. It goes kithout saying that they will be our Jiext senators. j Judge Clark opened court at Mor ganton last Monday. He at once im pressed our people as being possess ed of great administrative ability. His charge was somewhat different from the old beaten track, but em. graced all the law necessary for the fuidance of the jurors in the dis charge of their duties. He seems to e impressed with the idea that a long and tedious charge is not so es sential as the execution of the law. At the close of .his charge he paid a ery high compliment to the people 3f Burke county for the enterprising Ipirit they have manifested in the ex pensive repairs on our court house, hich makes it as convenient as any ii the State. He is very respectful to the gentlemen of the bar though $rm in his rulings. In the beginning e adopted a much needed rule, which s, that witnesses are required to be ?i the court room and not on the itreets during court hours, which has leretofore retarded the progress of Uie court. ti the District Court of the United States For the Western District of North Carolina At Statesville, No. 103.
