PIB ‘FILL A SfflP WITH FRIENDSHIP GOAL OF OVERSEAS RELIEF DRIVE ‘‘■Fill a Ship with Friendship” is the goal of the second statewide overseas relief drive to bo conducted iu North Carolina by the State Coun cil of Ch'urches, it was anuouneod today by Rev. Ernest J. Arnold, on ecutlve secretary of the Council. A; a meeting held recently in Durham, field workers now organizing the co»nty-to-county collection through out the state discussed plans and set the goal for the drive. It is estimated that about 3 .1-2 million pounds o^f clothing, shoos, bedding and other items vitally needed among war vic tims must be gathered -to make a ship’s cargo. That moans that an average of one pound of goods will bo collected from every person in the state during the last week of January. The drive dates are Janu ary 25-31. Present for the meeting weie: Mrs. Francis P. Cook of Albemarle, Mrs. James Odom of Jacksonville, Mr. Roland Garrett of Elizabeth City and Rev. Cecil Robbins of Warren- ton and Rev, William Smith of Yad- klnvlllo, all volunteers actively at work enlisting county chairmen for the drive. Presiding was Rev. Henry Ruark of Chapel Hill. Graham R. Ma-1 bry of Canton, both field workers, | were not able to attend the meeting. . Plans were made for extensive' showing of the relief film “This Road '| We Walk,” a 16 mm, sound motion, plctuie recently released by Church; World Service. Fifty copies of the film will be available for showing I during the month of the drive as well as several prints of the U. S. Army I film “Seeds of Destiny.” which was' widely used last year. During the last week of December and the first week in Jamiary, meet- Ing.s of field workers, couaty chair men and representatives from the Council of Churches aad Church World Service will be held at various strategic points around the state. Tentative plans call for meetings in Elizabeth City, Rocky Mount and Kinston the 29th, SOth and 31st of Docembor and meetings In Fayette ville, Charlotte, Asheville, North Wllkesboro and Greensboro the 5th, 6th and 7th of January. Field workers reported that 47 of the state's 100 counties now have county chairmen and that most of the others will have leaders for the drive named within a few days. Reserve Corps Can Serve As Escort Members of the Enlisted Reserve Corps in North Car9llna have the op portunity to serve as military escort for the remains of World War H dead. It was announced iby Col. Nor man McNe’’!, Senior Instructor for the Organized Reserve Corpa in North Carolina. Certain qualifications are required for reservists such as: Veteran of World Wav II; High School grad uate; Army General Classification Test of 85 or more, and have no dis ciplinary marks on his service record. Applicants must ivolunteer for not more than 12 months no less than 6 months duration. Applications being made must include the following In formation; Name, grade, aerial num ber, mailing address, length of tour I desired and dpte available, and loca tion of escort detachment desired.
