S. i Thoinn.s Xuast Credited With PU’- lorlnlizIiiK Famous Character In 187U I i Thomas Nast, the famous cartoon ist who cieated our conception of I Uncle Sam, the Republican elephant and the Democratic donkey, is also j credited with giving .America its I first modern pictoriallzatton of San ta Claus. Nust first sketched his notion of Santa Claus in 1873. This Santa was II rollicking, chubby old man smok ing a pipe and dressed in what look ed like a night shirt with fur collar and cuffs. Since that day he has grow'n taller and rounder, has devel oped a full white beard and mustache and above all has acquired the tradl- tlonol red suit bordered in ermine. The story of how our A-merlcan version of Santa Claus evolved Is in teresting. Accoivllng to legend, chil- dron of Lapland and Siberia, raised on tales of tho good and generous St. Nicholas, thought of their bene factor as dressed In furs and travel ing In a reindeer-drawn sleigh, Just as they did themselves, Stoiios of St. Nicholas Wondrous stories of this great Fourth century saint, who gave handsome presents to good little children, were repeated at the fire sides of all Europe from the time of his death in '342, The Dutch children observed the anniversary of his death on December 8 and received presents in their wooden shoes. These Dutch youngsters thought of St. Nicholas as a stern old man with a long white board, garbed In bish op's robes and currying a stick to chastise naughty children. The little Hollanders coming with their presents to found New Amster dam brought Santa Claus an "San Claas” as they said, with them. In no time the English colonial children whose fathers had taken over the Dutch settlement and renamed It New York caught on to this wonder ful man. The English moved Jils yearly visit from December G lo New Year's Eve, Germans coming lo America brought their Christmas customs: Christmas trees and Christmas can dles burned In honor of the Christ Child, whom the German children called "Kris Krlngle.** At about the time that these fes tivities were making Christmas Day important, families beginning to spread across the country chose this celebration as a day of reunion. Thus tho Dutch figure of Santa Claus, the German traditions of Christmas and the English season of celebration became combined In one single holiday. Fred art and Montag Stationery . . . Wise Men Came From The East Church tradition, presumably con sidering the Biblical mention of three specific gifts as ipresented to the Infant Jesus by the Wise Men, has identified the Magi as Caspar, Melchior, and 'Balthasar. . There could have been more than three: legend reports that there weue 12 Wise Men and that their Journey to iBethlehem had been anticipated for generations. Twelve learned men who lived lu a Far Eastern land appointed them selves to watch for the star of -beau- tltudo which they believed would announce tho birth of the Saviour. Each year, after the crops wore 'har vested, the patriarchs ascended to a’ cavernous retreat upon the platea'u of a high mountain to pray and praise God In silence for three days while they watched for the star. This went on for generations; when one of the patriarchs died, his son or kinsman would take bis place.
