Tn article" iti the New Orleans Tim? Democrat, - the dreamV of: im pressibnment, expresses this senti ment: , " '. '. ' Has . it not often seemed to jou that the more antiquated arid' the more unfamiliar an object or a place id, the more it appears at first sight to live, to possess a sort of inner being, a fetish-spirit, a soul? Well, no. "" We do not live in the ,- past...Some times we love to dwell in the far past; to go back into the my-flterii-s of Egypt which 1 un back- be hind all acknowledged chronology; sometimes to penetrate with Prof. Schlicmans tha ruin : of Tyrhens which anticipate the civilization of :v Greece; sometimes to admire the genius of Pericles which wrought Athci.s into a miracle of art; some times to go to Rome over which the Coliseum towered and still towers as the .wonder of a popular idea. But it pleases us to come down to the practical ot modern days, when art is controlled by a practical util ity What did the eld world do that the nw world has not done? What "were its acqueducts in comparison with rail road tunnels? Whatoom-pari.-on can they make with the .Mount Gotliard and the Mount Cenis tunnels ? and what wide en terprise such ai the rail roads that . in three or four lines span a contin ent, within a generation a wild con tinental route to unknown, and al most mythical regions ? " " .The least antiquated, the better. We come nearer to .the end and oh - . ject of human progress. We strip the wild Indian of his usjarped pos session. We bring into the control of civilization, we make the wilder ness the weight of civilization, and in doing1 that we have done much. Archeeolgy and aestheticism must yield to the practical; and the prac-1 tical is the aim and end of civilized effort. . ! It thus happens that while the Northern extremists of the Repu blican faith are preaching new crusades in the South, more section alism and renewed race hostilities, the leaders of the Republican party in the States named are imploring them to stop. It may be fun for Sherman and Hoar, but it is death ;to Republicanism as a votegetting instrumentality in the South. CJiicao Herald, lnd. Senator John Sherman lives in Richland county, Ohio. In the elec tion last week that county elected a Democrat to the State Senate, and gave a majority for Hoadly over 'Jforaker. The county is naturally Democratic, but the noticeable fea ture in its record this year is that the majority for the Democratic Senator who would be sure to oppose the re-election of Sherman was near ly 300 votes larger than the majority against Foraker. Boston Advertiser, Rep. , The Atlanta Constitution tells about a little negro boy who stray ed ofi" a few days ago, and some days after a big catfish was caught in the Albemarle river, which when pened was found to contain the missing hoy. .He hadallen into the river and the fish had swallowed him:"' Two thousand horned toads have been shipped from San Francises ((X.China. They will be converted into various kinds ?f medicines, which sell very high.
