Grit. The following. Written by .ft jnc hanic, shows the rilling "fattor .which enables many of his class to successfully stein the tide "amid - the coantless; .ilk of life:") ' Some cnil it luck, dear brother Jim. HOME J N DITSTR I E I read your recent article relative to home support for home indus tries, with much pleasure. I read it with the more interest, realizing '.is I do, the need of just such sug gestions. It is knowntotbe public, nd I presume to all the contractors in Western NoiQi Carolina, that the arm of T. L. Clayton & Co., have at Jnrgc expense, established large- mat-nine shops and works near Ashe" viile. They are equipped with the best, the latest improved, and costly inachineiy. They employ large number of lirst-class mechanice. They are prepared to furuish any ami all finished materials lor build ings, including fancy hard wood mantels, doors, stair ways, wains r otiing, &c, on short notice, and vuarantee to duplicate any price of any factory in the United States freight added. In the face , of all this, contractors and builders prefer to order and buy the same fgoods from Boston, and other places. Just as you say, the money thus sent off, goes to support ana enrich other communities, while for the want of it, workmen who prefer to be here, have to leavej and many others who would come, are deterred from so doing. There are, Messrs. Edit ors, a number ot "infant industries" in and around Asheville, which are iiillv meritorious, and deserve !he Vupnort of the people. . If they re eei ve it, they will not only prove, : you iorciblv argued, a great ben Hit to this community, but, by be- insr thus encouraged, would enlarge their establishment?, add to their I'm ee, and thus increase the busi ness of ourcommunitv. Contract 'irs and builders should think of thi lor the more the community is i.ttilt up the more work they must iieei.-saanly have.- 1 write this, not io inu?h as a matter of complaint, .t.s to urge our people to give more attention to una matter. Knowing that the more united and co-opera tive our community can be, the more prosperous all must be. - Yours, respectfully, Mkciiamc. Asheville.. . A . ; ; They can talk all they please about their great scientists,V said the brake - man, as he stepped from between5 tHe two freight cars and made his arms go up in the air, -'but I did something the other day that Darwin, Haeckel, Hur ley and all. them evolution fellers never r.oiild do, with all their larnin'. We were running along with about thirty j rars, when, our train broke in two sec tions. We stopped 'em an' we were goin' to couple ,up..aga in. when we. found we couldn't do it. Something was gone. Vait a minute,' says I to the conductor, and then I skipped out and ran back along the track. : It was then that I did what the crack scien tists and skilled mechanics have never been able to do."
