Development of Christian educatior in the mountainous regions of the State is perhaps as great In propor tion as that of any other part of the State. The progress of educations.1 work is really handicapped by too much tall; that would lead to an Ideu that most of It is of the missionary character. People In the western pari of the State tind these tones of re ported missionary and -uplift work more or less disagreeable. The Appalachian Industrial anil Training School at Boone and th Cullowhee Normal Industrial School in Jackson county are as much Stati institutions, supported by the State, as is the university, the Normal col l"ice at Greensboro, and A. and M college at Raleigh, ond the Eastern Carolina Training School at Green ville. Thoy feel that they are entitled to the dignity of being known as State institutions. They have never been distinctly charged with lielng mission ary institutions, and yet the multitud inous talk of missionary and other uplift wor!; has become more or les--att-iched to the Idea of educational work In the whole of western North Carolina. The same Is more or lees true of other schools which are In a degree under denominational Influence, as. for example, the school at Valle Cru cls, operated under the direction of Bishop Horner, and the school at Itanner Elk, operated for the Concord Presbytery, under the Immediate ohnrge of Rev. Mr. Edgar Tufts, There are many Institutions which are in the category of " missionary' work particularly, but the work of these Is sometimes more or less misunderstood, because of the missionary talk. The mission Idee as It relaitcs to China or Korea doesn't touch the mountain country at all, either In North Carolina or Tennessee. The Chinaman must be led entirely b the missionary, but the Christian and educational spirit of western North Carolina Is one of self-help to a very large degree, or, more particularly, one of self-reliance. It Is true that In many cases there Is need of money; still, this Is not In the sense of re ceiving missionary help as ordinarily understood, but a little help supple mentary to the people's own efforts efforts which are very' successful, with the sympathy and support of the State Itself and of citizens in other parts of North Carolina. Nobody who has any acquaintance with the work of the schools men tioned needs to be told that the spirit actuating their management Is en tirely unexceptionable, from the stand point of the mountain folks and every one else. It Is only wrong Impres sions on the part of the outsiders re garding them and their relations with the people around them that give rise to the feeling described. Chariot to Observer. ADENOIDS. Adenoids should be considered one of the most dangerous afflictions of children. If they are not removed, they press upon certain blood vessels which supply certain portions of the brain and prevent the proper and nor mal growth pf the chlJd-mlnd. Thous ands of cases of defective mcntullty, feeble mlndedncss and Idiocy are caused by adenoids. Moreover, they often stunt the child physically Shelby Highlander, .'
