The charges that United States Senator Isaac Stenhenson of Wisconsin se cured his electldn through,'bribery and that he spent $107,793 corruptly to influence voters were yesterday put by the United States senate Investigating committee squarely up to John J. Hlalne. a state senator 'who brought the charges. As a result' Blaine ad mitted he had no facts or Information personally known to him to be true upon which to substantiate .the charges. He admitted that the charges were based largely on news paper editorials, political speeches. and hearsay. "And you, on such information. were willing to make allegations which might Jeopardize a 'United States senator and which If proven might send him to the penitentiary s that true?" asked Senator W. B. Heyburn, the chairman. To this question Blaine made no answer other than that he thought he was performing a public duty by hav ing an Investigation of what he said was current report. "Do you think that it a public duty to bring charges again ft United States senator without facts to sub stantiate them?" asked Chairman Heyburn. i 'I thought so," replied the wit ness. "So when the Investigation Is be gun you have no facts to give to this committee which could be admitted in a court of law as proper and perti nent to challenge the validity either of Senator Stephenson's nomination or of his election?"
