This example was offered by the arrival in the city of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Tessel and Mr, and Mrs. Myleus from Nova Scotia. ' These visitors received some Asheville pam phlets- and literature last fall, about a year, ago, and were attracted by the imormauon mey contained, as a re' suit they have finally come to Ashe- tile, and when they paid a call to N. Buckner,' secretary of the board of trade, this morning, they had the same pamphlets. They stated to him that they were charmed with the city and surrounding country and Instead of being disappointed from the Infor mation, contained In the pamphlets, they considered the actual beauties here and the bracing atmosphere far beyond' the possibilities of word pic tures and' descriptions. They Intend to spend the entire winter here. JEFF DAVIS WEDS Arkanoax KriiaUir Take as Second Wire BIIhm IiPlla Carter of , Osark, Ark. ', Ozark, Ark., Oct J. Byrd of Cen tral Methodist church offered the In vocation and J. C. Orr. the toastmas- ter, Introduced the first speaker, R. R. Williams, who delivered a stirring address of welcome on behalf of the city and J. E. Rankin, Its mayor. ' Mr. Williams emphasized the fact that thla ,- city ' welcomed its visitors mora through action than words, that the words were simply a weak ex pression of the deeper spirit of wel come that could be felt in the very at mosphere. He hoped for these visit ors all possible enjoyment while here, and commended very highly the ef forts' of the men whom he addressed in advancing the interests of the com mercial world and their ability to' make the ideals they strlved for, re alizations. The response, on behalf of the visit ors, to this address of welcome was made by L. Lee Marr of Bryson City and he handled it in a way that be spoke sincerity. He paid high tri bute to Asheville and the grand work of advancement so successfully, car ried on by Its citizens. He paid. equ ally nign tribute to Mayor Rankin, a man whom he considered to be of the broad minded claas so essential to leadership in such a community, and expressed to him and his representa tive, Mr. Williams, the most hearty apreclatlon felt by the visitors for the unaloyed welcome extended them. N. Ruckner, secretary of the local board of trade and a born "booster,1 was next Introduced by Mr. Orr and spoke on "The Need of a Western North Carolina spirit and How to Create It." Mr. Buckner first outlln ed the far-reaching possibilities of this section as a producing and dlstrl buting centers These" possibilities, he said, were so great that the ' people here do not fully realize them, and they could be much moro easily rec ognized and valued by an outsider. He also, cited the great possibilities open to the manufactur ers in many lines. As agents already at work in the. accomplishment of the end to keep this money at home, he referred to the work of the agri cultural demonstrators, the land and Industrial agent of the Southern Rail way . and President W. However, for lull accomplishment of the end In sight, he said that there might be a hearty co-operation among business Interests and the ln- uividaulQ connected with these, a "true western North Carolina spirit.' The business men and their represen tatives who faced him, he declared, could all wield a mighty Influence in propogating (his spirit, and his idea was that the. traveling man could be , among the foremost of all boosters. with such a wide range of influence, and he implored those present to lose no opportunity for speaking a good word for this section and In spreading the tidings of the great, opportunities for success here. ; Commissioner of Labor and Print lng M. L. Sherman, editor of the Hen dersonvllle Hustler, was the next speaker on the program and he stated in no uncertain , terms that he was for this movement of advancing the interests of this section, heart and soul, and .considered it one of the most commendable undertakings ever instituted by Its people. He paid ex travagant compliments to the men oresent as the backbone or this Switzerland " of America, and ex pressed his Implicit confidence in .hem, to be able to accomplish any. thing for ' .western North Carolina which they cared to undertake. In the speech of Maj. William A. Graham, commissioner of agriculture, those present were given gome real facts and figures about North Caro lina Industries, with special reference to the amount of money sent out of the state for the necessaries of life that might easily and most profitably be produced at home. He considered this western section to be fast devel oping into the undisputed garden spot of the world, and he declared that the exhibits at the western North Carolina fair bore out his contention. These, he said, served as a very small ex ample to the people of the almost boundless productions of this section and, with push and perseverance, the ends sought could be accomplished more speedily than many might think possible. A short speech was heard from W. T. Lee, state corporation commission ers, and he tried to impress upon his hearers the necessity of boosting the section In order to obtain the desired results;' and he urged each and every one to have this boosting spirit always with him. With such a movement on foot, he said, and Kith such men be hind It, success was sure and not far distant. H. Redwood also made a short talk along the lines. of co-operation "i During" the 'evening the-Asheville quartet rendered several selections which were greatly appreciated Therx was evidence at the meeting of a spirit for a greater Western North Carolina and in furtherance of this a meeting is to be held at the Ashe ville council United Commercial Trav elers on Saturday flight, when It is MOUNTAIN MEADOWS INN Open throughout October and No vember; these months being the most beautiful time in the mountains.
