PI ADOPTED FOR I II Probation Officer's Salary to Go Toward Its Support Routine Business. ' At the meeting of the board of aldermen last night it was decided to accept the proposition of the coun ty commissioners in regard to the es tablishment of the reform or training school for the city and county, where' by the city Is to furnish the old wa terworks property on the Swannanoa river, consisting of about 65 acres of land and several buildings, the coun ty to repair the buildings and main tain the institution, provided the city will pay the amount now paid to the probation officer, and furnish the street sweepings and manure from the city stables for enriching the farm. From this it would seem that those who have worked so long to have the school established are about to see their plans realized, practically in the way it has been suggested. Several other matters of more or less importance were attended to at the meeting, one of which was the enactment into law, which takes ef fect today, of the ordinance forbid ding coasting and roller skating with in the city limits. The special tax committee recom mended that the request of the city market meat dealers that their tax be rescinded, be not granted. The city engineer reported on the matter of establishing a property line on North Main street. His report was to the effect that the stores north of the new hotel are not on the prop erty of the city. .The street superin tendent was then Instructed to con fer with the property owners to see what propositions they would make to sell the city enough land to put the property line back on a line with the new hotel. No denflinte action was taken about having the cars of the Ashevllle Elec tric company circle thes quare In or der to do away with some of the con gestion on Pack square when all the cars meet every 15 minutes. It was reported that the local officials of the company are) willing to take the mat ter up with the general officials, but that the change would probably cost $75,000. X. Buckner requested that a prop erty line be establiHhed on Aston lane, which was referrea to the city en gineer for report ot the next meet ing. To the street committee was re ferred the proposition of F. A. Sum ner to donate Lenox avenue to the city and to keep it up through the winter, provided the city would lay a curb. The complaints of the property owners of Magnolia avenue and Rob erts street In regard to their paving assessments were also referred to the street committee to report afte- the work on both streets has been com pleted. The obtaining of new benches for the police court room was referred to the police and market house com mittees. No action was taken In regard to the requist of S. D. Pelham that he be allowed to retain his sign over the sidewalk. This had already been re ferred to the city engineer to deter mine if the light is over city prop erty. The complaint that some of the ad vertisements had been taken from the drop curtain at the Auditorium, which were placed there. It Is claim ed, with the understanding that they were to remain, was referred to the city attorney. The owners wish the curtain returned to them. The Auditorium committee report-: ed that the fire escape had been erect ed at the Auditorium but had Just been painted and had not been thor oughly tested. ' Some of the school boys and the firemen will be asked to test it.
