Tomorrow ia the Fifth Sunday after Easter, or Rogation Sunday: in the Latin, Rogare to beseech. The Gos pel for the day Is concerning roga tions, teaching us how to ask God, so as we may obtain, and withal fore tells Christ's approaching Ascension. In the Roman Church It is Cantate Sunday, as usual from the Introlt In Germany Rogation Sunday is the 'Betsontag, with the same meaning. The Rogation days, Monday, Tues day and Wednesday, immediately pre ceding Holy Thursday, or" Ascension Day, were first Instituted by Mamer tus, Bishop of Vlenne, A. D. 460, and he was the first who applied the use of litanies on these days, accompan ied with public processions. In Eng land and elsewhere, these processions halted at wayside crosses, or stations, and supplications were made for the Divine bles&lng upon the seed sown in the fields. These processions are still kept up In some nlaces. The International bun day School lesson is from 1 Samuel 20, "The Friendship of David and Jonathan" . ' the meaning of friendship being the dominant thought The Golden Text is Proverbs 17:17 A friend loveth at all times. ... u " 7: The Churches. Frcedman's Latest Spring Models for , Men of Good Tasto. Gem Clothing Store, WORDS FDR TRUTH ... .i ... : ... WORSHIP. Its Symbolism and Meaning. Beauty la the child of God, ugli ness is the .offspring 'of the devil. That is a paradox; but like all para doxes it has a profound meaning. That is to say, there is a sense in which it Is true. For what Is beauti ful? That is beautiful which fulfils the purpose for which It was made. In that sense, the most perfect con formity to type is most divine; the most incomplete and unfurnished product is most devilish. The bulldog is therefore most beautiful who ap pears to be most ugly; he is the most perfect specimen of his kind, and therefore he is in the truest sense beautiful. Therefore what the World calls ugliness, may be quite beautiful, and what the world calls beautiful, may, if It fails to fulfil the design of its maker, be most ugly. It Is clear therefore that training needed for the appreciation of beauty. The man who has never learned art will prefer a cheap print to an old master, a comic song to Mo zart or Beethoven, Morecambe to Killarney, and a tin tabernacle to St. Paul's Catedral. V The beauty therefore of Worship. the Symbolism of Churches, the hal lowed influence of art, and the high music in the House of Prayer cannot be rightly appreciated without train ing. Bare walls and a cracked Har? monium may have tender associa tions for some simple souls; but it is hardly true to say that they are more spiritual than those who find in the highest art and the richest surround ings an outlet for their spiritual na ture, and an adequate expression for the devotion of their heart It is not less spiritual, but surely more spir itual to find God in all things bright and beautiful, to see- His footsteps on the dewy grass, fresh sparkling in the morning sunshine; to hear His voice in the song of the birds and in the ripple of the waters; to read the mes sage of His love and power In the watered gardens, and the smiling val leys; in the pure sweet landscapes and the quiet homesteads of English ru ral life; to see in the works of art and In the masterpieces of great mu sicians not merely the power of the creature, but the glory of the Crea tor;, to be unable to recognize any fragment of the great world of sweet ness and beauty that does not reflect the very image of Him Who saw all that He had made and found it very good. And therefore the plea for what is called simplicity is really and truly an attempt, often quite un conscious, to exclude Ood from the best and highest parts of that world which He has made and to block the million pathways of approach along which He comes to His people, ana they come to Him. To be simple is not necessarily to be devout, to offer the ointment in a wooden platter In stead of an alabaster box does not of necessity do honour to Him to Whom the offering Is made. If beau ty comes from God then beautiful Lthlngs may most fittingly be present ed unto Him. ' The worship therefore of the Church is not rendered more spirit ual because it is offered in a build ing which no art has adorned, and no skill has beautified. And It may be that our love of simplicity is due not so much to excess 'of spirituality. as to lack of training and of knowl edge, as necessary for the apprecia tion of true worship, as it Is for the comprehension of true art.
