TOBACCO GROWERS HOLD ELECTION Cast Ballots on May 9th at the County Seats in Three States. The electiou of directors for the Tobacco Growers Cooperative As sociation for the season of 1925-26 begins next Saturday May, fl,wliuu the Tobacco Cooperatives iu Vir ginia, North Carolina and South , Carolina cast their ballots for the delegates who are to name the , association directors from the twenty-two districts ir. the three states. The counting of ballots will be gin at noou of next Saturday iu the courthouses of every import ant tobacco producing county in the Caroliuas and Virginia and all ballots must be in the hands of the electiou committees at the varioit# county seats by noon of that day. The delegates who are elected at this meeting will gather in district meetings within the next few days to nominate the di rectors from their districts for the coming seasou, and members of the association from every county in the tobacco belt are being urged to attend the annual meeting at Raleigh on May 19 to confirm the nomination of the directors from the entire area. There is much interest in the election and the annual meeting of the Tobacco Growers Coopera tive Association this year and a large attendance is looked for wbeu the members l rem three states will meet at Raleigh to dis cuss with the directors and gener al manager of the association the plans and policies for the coming . reason. ( The tobacco association is al . ready partially putting into effect the policy regardiug directors that was recommended by the commit tee which it Invited to investigate its affairs, and it has been known for aoine time that several heads ■ Of departments in the association have, voluntarily declined re-elec tion. It wa« pointed out by the investigation committee iu connec tion with its criticism that ''tne highest percentage of deliveries | has been made in the sections where dlreotors are employed on ; a fall time basis." Notwithstand ing this fact, the withdrawal of heads of departments from the as : aociation's directing board marks . a very definite step in a policy whleh the directors believe will work for the eventual good of the MBOOiatloU The tobacco association has an i tiounced other changes in policy and practice since inviting the public officials of three states to make a frank criticism of its man agement aud is urging a full a tendance by its members for fur ther discussion of pUtus and poli cies at the annual meeting in Hal ; eigh on May 19. More than 50,000 members of the association live within a hun dred miles of its headquarters at Raleigh and with thepreseut keen interest in the affairs of the asso ciation, a record breaking annual ) session is looked for this month. This is a gaiu from 1 spraying of 74 bushels per acre, i In dry seasons, Dr, Leiby iilno secured good results with dusting, using one part of lead arsenate to six parts of finishing iime. Dr. Leiby says, "as a rule it is safest to use the poissued Bordeaux at least in the last two applica-, tions though the first application may be dust. Our experience shows the grower should uotspr»y sparingly but must use enough materal to cover all parts of the vine thoroughly. This will re- [ quire from 100 to 125 gallon pf liquid per acre. Any grower can I secure the goodresults that we , did if he will use a good Bordeaux mixture and efficient spraying machinery. Plant sound seed in a wel 1 pre pared seed bed to be assure d of h good crop stand, advise extension workers of State College The garden is no longer a play thing but a very valuable aid in produciug the food supply of a farm, says horticultural workers of State CoHege.
