Livestock Farmer Must Haye Business Sense Emphasis today must, be placed 011 the business side of farming and this is espee ally important in livestock farming. The pro ducer who does not arrange his and marketing accor ding to markets and costs will fail. , "The successful livestock farmer always figures to get the greatest amount of profit from his finished stock," says W. W. Shay, swine extension specialist at State Col lege. "The man who had 75 hogs averaging 175 pounds each 011 September first had a total of 13,- 125 pounds and the price was 815 per hundred making their value at the market amount to sl,9G3.tf 5. If the freight rate from ins sta tion was 30 cents per hundred 011 a minimum car of 16,000 pounds or S4B, this subtracted from the gross price, would have left him $1,920.75. If the of raising the hogs was $7.00 per hunderd or $918.75, his net profit on the car would be $1,002.00 minus the yard charges and shrinkage." But this farmer should not have sold for another two weeks in which time he could-easily have added another 20 pounds to each of the hogs making them average 195 pounds each with a* total » weight of 14,725, when at the same price they would have been worth $2,193.75. Making the same deductions for freight and pro duction, he would have a profit of $1,122.00. In other words, the profit on the car would have been increased by $120.00 for the two weeks of feeding, whichis S6O per week for his labor. In the first case, states Mr. Shay, there was a profit per pig of $13.36 and in the last case a profit per pig of $14.96. The price might have gone down but this ip hardly likely during September according to an average of several years' prices. Measured in terms familiar to North Carolina farm ers, Mr. Shay estimates the. loss of selling too soon to be the mar ket value of over two bales of cotton. Tom Tarheel says it is a plea sure to work in his large field now that all the stumps have been blown out. As the soils are, so are the peo ple. A fertil soil is indicated by a happy, prosperous, vigorous people. One day's work in the corn field this fall will secure enough seed to plant the corn crop next year.
