1 HE GLEANER 1 1 ISSUED IVEKY THURSDAY. 1. D. KERNODLE, Editor. $1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE. ?n tared at ttie Postofflee at Graham. N. C., aa aaoood-claa* matter. GRAHAM, N. C., SEPT. 1, 1927. A blanket increase in the valuation of property in Newlin township of 33 ^ per cent was lately made by the County Commissioners. This action of the Board brought a storm of protest from the citizenry of that good township, as well it might. If allowed to stand it would increase their tax burden a third, or raise every $1.00 paid for the past year to $1.33| for the ensuing year. Isn't that going some? It is unbelievable that the good people of that sec tion would object to paying their share of taxes based on a fair valuation as compared with the county at large. This mat ter is yet to be settled. The County Accountant has published the ' 'Alamance Coun ty Budget for year 1927-'28." The valuation of taxable prop erty is "not completed," so the tax levy has not been made, though the new county finance law provides that the levy be made not later than Wednesday after the 3rd Monday in Aug ust, if we have been correctly informed. Last year the rate of taxation was $1.45 on the $100 valuation, and according to the aforesaid budget the ' 'estimated rate" for the year ending June 30, 1928, will jje $1.57 on the $100 valuation, or a raise of 12 cents on the $100, which means an increase of $1.20 on the $1,000 valuation, $12.00 on $10,000 and $120 on $100,000 valuation. On the taxable property of the county the increase will aggregate a good many thousands of dollars. It's time to economize. Now is the time! v ? Alexander Wilson Community Cbau-1 tauqua Closed Last Sunday After noon?Good Program Well At tended?Audience Pleased. The fifth annual Community Chautauqua of the Alexander Wilaon School District came to a close Sun day afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. The last of the programs consisted of a religious service conducted by Rev. E. S. Currie, Presbyterian Mission ary to China, and former chaplain in the World War. The Chautauqua began Thursday night. At that time one reel of motion pictures was shown, and music rendered by Dr. Will Long and his band of Graham. Then there was an address by President Few of Duke University. President Few gave an inspiring and instruct ive talk. "Everybody wants to live a successful, useful, and happy life" he said, "Behold the fowls of the air?they are at home in their world; perfectly adaptable to their surroundings." The program for Friday night, the second evening of the Chautauqua, consisted of motion pictures, a piano solo by Mr. 8. Ashton Sharpe, and song selections by the Graham Male Quartet. The address of the even ing was delivered by Dr. Clarence Poe, Editor of the Progressive Farm er, Raleigh, ,N. C. Dr. Poe spoke of the dairy industry of this coun try, and particularly concerning the dairy industry of Alamance county. "The most striking thing about the recent development of the dairy in dustry in this country is the rapid increase in the consumption of milk during the last five years," said Dr. Poe. He said that there were sever al reasons for this, but the principal reason was the recent scientific dis covery 'Which showed milk to be ab solutely essential to the growth and froper development of children, n the opinion of Dr. Poe the in crease in the rate of consumption of milk will continue, and an over supply of dairy products is not likely in this country in the near future. Dr. Poe's remarks were instructive to all fanners interested in the dairy industry. The Saturday night program con sisted of song selections by the Swepsonville Quartet, a vocal solo by Miss Grace Cheek of Mebane, and a play, "The Winning of La tan e." The play was directed by Miss Bes sie Holmes and Mrs. Evie C. Mar shall of Graham. The program was good and well presented. The large audience present wsa well entartain . ed.and many expressed delight with dm program. Fogleman? Shoffntr Reunion?Other 1 Whitsett News. Whitsett, N. C..
