1 HE GLEANER f GRAHAM. N. C., JULY 3, 1930. t 1 ISSUED EYKKY THURSDAY. C J. D. KERNODLE, Editor. [ ? J $1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE, i Rntared at the Pos'offlce at Graham. N. C.. an ?euoud-ol&aa matter. ^ Today is State Democratic cou- j vention day in Raleigh. [ Along about this time eleveu ? years ago the World War veterans 1 were getting home from over seas 1 The new tariff bill lately passed | by congress has caused th% Italian i government to retaliate by raising the import duties on automobiles J more than 100 percent. That hits ( one of the biggest industries in this | country a stunning blow. There < have been and will be others. j Dr. Tnurman D. Kitclpn, who has ] distinguished himself as dean of the j medical school of Wake Forest col lege for the past several years was , on Wednesday, at a meeting of the trustees in Raleigh, elected president j of the college to succeed Dr. Fran cis P. Gaines, resigned to accept the presidency of Washington and Lee university in Virginia. Dr. Kitchin comes of the famous Kitchin family of Halifax county and is a son of Hon. W. 11. Kitchen, one time con gressman. The German Peace Treaty was signed eleven years ago last Sat- , nrday. The Germans wore against i it, spoke of it as a "scrap of pap er," and predicted with consider ble vehemance that it would not stand. But the Allies placed props about it in the way of an occupa- i tion army to help it stand. It grew ' stronger as the days and years ' passed, so much so, that the last of the occupation troops left the Rhine a few days ago, leaving the" - Treaty secure and steady. Like- 1 wise, 154 years ago tomorrow, the pact signed by the Continent al Congress in Philadelphia was discredited by Great Britain, but she has lived to see the rebellious Colonies grow into the most pow erful nation on earth and one which she is proud to call her friend. Democratic Convention. Delegates Chosen to State Conven yention?Speeches? Leo Carr Re elected County Chairman RESOLUTIONS. The Democrats of Alamance held their connty convention in the court house last Saturday afternoon. The attendance was not large like the old time rousements that gathered to name the county candidates, but it was 100 percent for undoing what was done two years ago. This sen timent stuck out from every corner from start to finish. Leo Carr, county chairman, called the convention to order, and- Dr. T. F. Opie led in prayer. Louis C. Allen was called to the chair as temporary chairman and J. D. Kernodle and J.S. Vincent were requested to set as temporary secre taries. The temporary organization was made permanent, and the con vention was declared open for busi ness. Upon motion, A. M. Carroll, Earl B. liorner, E. C. Kumbley, W. 8. Harris and A. G. Porterfield were named as committee on resolutions, and submitted the following resolu tions which were unanimously adopted: 1. That this convention does with pride recall to the memory of the electorato of this county the last two National Democratic Administrations during which more effective legislation relating to the welfare of the common people was placed on the statute hooks than bad been written for 60 years preceding said adminis trations and during which time this country enjoyed a type of prosperity the like of which has not been witnessed in any subse quent Republican administration; and that this convention pause to pay respect to the memory of our beloved and distinguished leader daring Baid admlnistaations, Wood row Wilson, whose spirit moves on and whose example and deeds continue to inspire us and will exalt those who come after as. "" 2. That this convention go on record as condemning the Nation al Republican administration for tsiug itH governmental authority 4 u the interest of the powerful .Lid the rich aud agaiust the 111 f erest of the small manufacturers,, armors and laborers of the lountry, which action on the part " if said administration has caused * tation-wide depression resulting ? n countless bankruptcies and al- " nost starvation to the fanners 1 ind laboring [atopic. 3. That we do hereby endorse .he State Democratic Aduiiuisir i ^ .ion and do commend Governor iarduer for the studious and N laiustaking efforts he has made ( lince his induction in office in the ntercst of the welfare of our , state-and all of its institutions, , ind more particularly do we coin nend him for his determination ( jo give to the taxpayers of the ( State au economic administration. 4. That this convention con temns the Republican county ad ministration for general inefficien :y in couuty government and par- I ticularily do we call the attention i sf the voters of the couuty to the ( jross negligence of said adminis- . oration in the conservation of the t public improvements of this conn- t ty which negligence ou their part ] lias cost the taxpayers of the 1 ;oti 11 ty hundreds of thousands of t lobars. o. That we favor economy in ( government and we recommend a < strict practice of this principle in sach department of our county idiuiinstmtiou and the conserva- ] tion of all of our public improve ments on au economical basis; that ive know our candidates to be men of sound judgment and bus iness experience who are emen- ' eutly fitted to administer our ; county government in the most efficient and economic manner, 6. That we believe in the prin ciples of Democracy as enunciat ed by Thomas Jeflferson which were put uto practice by Andrew Jackson and Wood row Wilson, and we deplore a government for the benefit of the few, and we verily believe that the interest of the great mass of people is best subserved under a Democratic administration And this con vention does, therefore, appeal to | the electorate of Alamauce County ] to cast their votes in the Novem- | ber election for the Democratic , candidates from Township Officers to that of United States Senator.
