THE GLEANER ' ^^<^WVSIS?ViAiVVVVS?SlS?WWS^ ?? ORAHAlt N. 0., MAR 9, 1933. 1 ISSUED BVKkY THCE8DAY . T ? J. D. KERNODLE, Editor, c *1.00 A YEAR, IN ADVANCE. . loiartd it U? >?*ofl)oe itOnhtn, ' ,N C.. I* i.-iliHmatttf. j ' r ' ] MR. ROOSEVELT INAUGURATED At 12:06 Saturday.Franklin ' Delano Roosevelt took the oath 1 of office, administered by Chief ' Justice Charles Evans Hughes, 1 as the 32nd president of the 1 United States. ( The ceremonies were wit nessed, it is estimated, by the , the greatest throng in the Na tion's history. All the people are interested and hence the great gathering. A "new deal" is on and every loyal American hopes the out come will put the country on firm footing. MAYOR CERMAK DEAD. Mayor Anton Cermak of Chicago, who received the bul let intended for Mr. Roosevelt at Miami February 15th, died at 6:57 Monday morning after a brave, determined fight. "I'm glad it was me and not you," he told the president-elect. He could have no finer epitaph. He was reforming Chicago and his death is an irreparable loss. Giuseppe Zangara, the assas sin, will go to his doom. JUST A BIG PLANTATION. Such is the United States of America. Up in Washington is the "Big House" and scatter ed over the vast area are the settlements, large and small. If things don't go smoothly at headquarters, the influence of mismanagement and discord at the centre will surely per meate the whole aggregation. If weakness and indecision prevail at the head of any or ganization, that organization will soon find itself beset by a host of troubles and difficulties that only a firm hand and de termination can set at rights again. This is the same country that it was in 1770. It is peopled by the descendents of the strou < and determined men and worn en who threw off the yoke aud blazed the way for the great nation it is now. The beet traditions of that hardy race have been preserved. Some of them may be semi-dor mant, but they are not dead. A revival is needed, and when they have been quickened by the right touch they will spring into action again, vigorous aud undaunted. ACTION Mr. Roosevelt in his inaug ural address expressed the seuti-1 rneut that conditions needed ac tion and needed it now. 11 e meant what he aaid. Scarcely had the great parade iu his honor finished passing the re viewing stand, when he called his cabinet and advisers togeth er and set. his program in mo- ( tion. - i First he declared a ''holiday" t for all national and Federhl Re serve banks for four days. Snn- ' ilar action had already been ( taken by all the States, possi I bly with two or three excep- i tions. This was to prevent "runs" on banks and hoarding. He expressly inhibited the witti drawal of gold. Action was also taken to is sue clearing certificates and scrip for temporary use. It was decided later not to issue Scrip, but issue Federal Reserve notes of which more than three billions will be ready for circu- j 1 " ation as soon as they can be ;ot off the government jninting ureases. That's not all. Mr. Roose relt convened Congress in spe :ial session, to meet today. At he same time the President tnd his cabinet, the leaders in Jong.asS and his advisers lie jan formulating plans for re lief. This is action and ac.i m is what the people want Ad the ills may not be cured?cannot be cuaed in a day, but the el fort will be helpful and hearten the people. County CommisMoners' Meeting.
